This is a very good image of male flowers on an American Holly. The flowers show clearly the stamens (pollen bearing parts) and the absence of the female ovary - the green bump in the center of female flowers.

You are welcome. The characteristic shown in your image is shared by all male holly flowers, making it the reliable way to separate male plants from female plants when there is no fruit present.

Nice photo Ginger.

ViburnumValley I'm wondering if you can answer a question I asked a while ago about Holly Changing sexes. Three new Blue Prince, I believe Ilex x meserveae 'Blue Prince', were propagated by air layering and are now fairly large. One in particular is loaded with berries in the winter. Can Ilex change sex?

I would like more information about this situation. I don't necessarily agree that anything has changed from the starting point.

This would be better in its own thread, too. Could you resurrect the posting where you originally asked this question, and link me to it? That would be the place to pick up the conversation.

I'm going to see if I can extract your original question from there, and make it a separate thread. That thread seems to be about entirely other things, and discussions about your subject likely will be lost or of no value to anyone who might benefit.
