Apple Pan Dowdy

By Sharon
December 30, 2012

Long, long years ago when our colonists made their way across the ocean, they brought with them valuable things. One of those valuable things was the apple seed. From those seeds came so many different apple colors, textures and flavors, it's difficult today to make a choice.

Wow... you brought back a memory of my mom singing "... apple pan dowdy... makes your eyes light up and your tummy say howdy"

Thanks! Smiling

I tip my hat to you. Loved the tale but for us it was more like stewed fruit.
Do you also feel from Thanksgiving to date that there is a requirement of a lonely hearts club? I have been going through the posts quietly, family persons are busy Thumbs up but there is a certain element Shrug! . Sharon thank you for taking them into consideration.
Regards,
Arif.

Arif, I'm not sure what you mean by 'lonely hearts club'.

Perhaps this is close: Most people are busy with family during the winter weeks between Thanksgiving and New Years Day and things are relatively quiet on a gardening site. But there are some of us whose time is spent more in solitude and you might find us here more frequently than others who have larger families. When that happens, it's always good to have something new to read. Smiling

On the other hand, I may have misunderstood you completely. Confused

Happy New Year!

Every time this comment thread pops up on my home page due to new entries, I start singing "shoo fly pie" again. Hilarious! So this morning I just went ahead and played it on my iTunes -- now I'm listening to a 2-album Dinah Shore collection. It's been awhile since I've listened to her -- had forgotten how much I like her voice. Thumbs up

As for apple pan dowdy - it has to wait for payday so I can buy apples, but I'm thinking I'll have to try it.

That was just the one that I had looked up on iTunes. All this time, I'd thought it was a song that my mom made up. She did that alot ~ whip out a silly song on the piano to entertain us kids.

Moby, did your mom ever sing "mairzie doats" ? That's another favorite of mine.

I think everybody sang Mairzie doats, but it isn't one I learned from my mother. It was one that my friends in first grade taught me and we sang it in the round; half the class started then the other half started in the middle of the first line. Same thing with Row Row Row your Boat.

Of course I can't sing worth a nickel, so I don't go around humming very often.

I think that Mairzie doats" is actually "Mares eat oats, and does eat oats, and little lambs eat ivy. A kid'll eat ivy too, wouldn't you?" All about animals. I know somebody who named a filly Mairzie Doats. I never saw how she spelled it. Might have been Mareseatoats.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

fiwit ~ yep, she sang that one too! Shocking (disappointing?) when one learns the real words.

My favorite giggle-generator was:

With your hands in your pockets,
And your pockets in your pants,

Have you ever seen a fishie do the
Hootchy Kootchy dance?

You never did, you never will!

There are tons of additional verses to that song that were tacked on to the original over the years. Some are hilarious, some are pretty silly. It's for sure though, once you get that tune on your mind, it won't go away till the words just jump outta your mouth.

Just thinking of apples and looking out over the still snow-covered lawn makes me realize that fall was not so long ago. Wonderful story about the old apple tree, Sharon. Oh the stories I bet that apple tree could tell!

I don't remember the Apple Pan Dowdy song, but my Mom always sang the Mares Eat Oats song. She would dance around the table and sing the silliest songs and we got such a big kick out of her "old fashioned" songs and dances.

Happy New Year to you too, Sharon!

lol, I did have to look up the song references. I was surprised that they were not in my Mom's repertoire. Thanks, but pushing closer to 60 sure makes me feel old Smiling

Oh Spring! Where are you? I count the days too, Sharon. Right after the new year starts, I begin mentally counting by weeks from January 1 to April 1 when the weather is supposed (????) to start getting better and the flowers are just beginning to wake up.

11 weeks to go!

I feel a little like Noah must have felt today. The rains are non stop and there is so much standing water in my yard it seems that I'm on an island. But since we've been in such a heavy drought I am thankful for the rain.
