My neighbor was thinning his sedum planters last Fall and gifted me with some of the plants. Amongst those was one that I've grown quite fond of but have no idea of what it is or how to tend it. Thanks to all that respond, Mac.

Hi, Mac. Maybe a variegated vinca?

Thanks Lynda. I think I found it while scanning the plant id forum. The pic looks pretty close to what I have. The plants I have growing outdoors are really leggy though. Like 3' to 4' leggy, or more. They get full sun until midday.

Mac, look under vinca in the data base, and then click on greater variegated periwinkle. You didn't say whether the neighbors sedum containers were left outside all year, but if they were I doubt the plant could be a baby rubber plant, as that is a houseplant and couldn't survive outside during the winter.

It is not a Peperomia. Peperomia grow their leaves one at a time. The leaves on that plant are growing in pairs.

I think you can rule out Peperomia obtusifolia. The plant in your photo appears to have an opposite leaf arrangement; Peperomia leaves appear alternately along the stem.

It does look like a variegated Vinca. Are the leaves thin or succulent?

Thanks to all.

@gardenfish
Lynda, the plants were grown outdoors. We get below-freezing temps over winter here.

@DaisyI
Leaves are thin and in pairs.

I thnk its Variegted Vinca. Its Hardy to zone 4 - my neighbor has it growing in her front yard. If you give it enough light, it should bloom purple vinca flowers next summer. Come back with an update and more photos.

@DaisyI
Thanks. The plants I'm growing outdoors, in the ground since summer of last year, have no flowers. Planted in 2 locations, some get full morning sun, the others full sun all day. I'll take a close-up of the leaves and post shortly.

Here's a close-up. The part of the leaves that appears to be white is actually very light green. Large leaves are about 1-1/2" long.

This appears to be Vinca major - the variegated type. It is grown in our area (Z 5 - 6) mostly for use as a vine in hanging pots or containers of annual flowers. It can extend to grow into the ground, and I have seen it overwinter in a protected area.

Thank you Smiling . That might be it. The nearest visual match I could find in the database is Greater Periwinkle (Vinca major 'Expoflora')
except that the leaf pairs on my plants are very widely separated, many with a stem 4 to 6 inches or more between each pair. That could be caused by some external condition like lighting, I suppose. I guess I'll have to wait until they blossom to see what the flowers look like. Thanks again.

Definitely Vinca major. Internode length is due to light and vigor. The more vigorously it grows, the longer the internodes and shade will increase it as well.
