Here's my container planting that I squeezed into an outdoor shower (why the previous owner installed an outdoor shower is beyond me). I think outdoor showers should be in places like Hawaii but there it was all cement and brick and located in pretty shady area. So I convinced hubby to lug this trough home from a feed store and planted these shade plants that were baking in pots in the sunny place in the patio.

The amount of dirt to fill this baby was going to be too much (in volume and shoveling) so I packed pieces of those large hard styrofoam that one gets from buying electronics (and that can't be
carried-away recycled) into bottom of the trough and fillled dirt from that height.
Now when I look out my bathroom door with glass, I can see my trough that's filled with several types of ferns, huecheras, hellebore, and a striped leaf viney plant that i dont know the name of. Can anybody Identify it for me? It's is plant that is overhanging the trough

Bev that is wonderful. Can't wait to see that hellebore in bloom.
I adore that viney plant, wish I could tell you what it is. It looks familiar, maybe it will come to me later on.

Very cleaver way to use that space, and what you did to minimize the amount of soil you used.

Thanks much, you all! Rolling my eyes.

Caroline, I think you got it right; some species of Lamiastrum. I just need to pick a piece off and compare leaf pattern and shape. That plant was a weed in the back yard when we bought the house but I loved the foliage (apologize to say this, but I'm not that much of a flower fan; I buy for foliage). So it got incorporated into the planter for its interesting foliage pattern and viney nature.

As to that light green tall plant...I should have known better than to post a picture and not know exactly every single plant species in the container; I will have to double think next time before posting {my head will hurt... Crying }...BUT I scanned thru many Google fern images and came up with best guess: Brake Fern. If anybody can verify my guess or correct me, please do! Green Grin!

That is why it looked so familiar, I have had lamium before, just not that variegated one.
Bev, could yours be Lamium maculatum 'Variegatum'.

Spring, just noticed you are in WA. Which part? I just moved from Spokane after being there for 2 years. I remember talking my hubby into taking public transportation for the first time in his life in Spokane because bus stop was just across from apt complex we lived in. He started standing at bus stop that winter when Spokane got 96 inches of snow that winter. I remember seing a temp of minus 4 one nite and couldn't believe the number as being real. Right there and then I was thinking of packing and suffice to say we (and all my semps that almost froze to death and wanted to come into the house) couldn't make it back to CA fast enough. Is it really cold there now?

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I'm not on that side of the mountains, I'm about 45 min. north of Seattle. I went to school at central in Ellensberg for my last 2 years. My first winter on the east side of the mountains and last, 1978. They had the worst Ice storm in ten years. The next winter I did my student teaching on this side of the mountains. Yes, Spokane can get so cold. My oldest son is in Pullman right now, he likes it. Not for me!

Anyway keep us posted on your planter.

Every plant has a local common name! In my yard, that would be called the Pretty Plant.

Sometims I've tried to start too many things in a bed, then wondered a few years later whether something unfamiliar was a late sprouter, a a gift from a bird, or a weed..

When I go to a plant ID forum, I'm seldom asking just about they variety, but also the genus and whether its a wseed or not.

Shrug!
