Ok, lets put it another way. What I have heard is your nighttime temperatures are milder but daytime temperatures can be as ferocious as ours in summers. Now in winters the shoe is on the other foot. Our winters are as bad as Oregon's or lets say Lynn's area, same miserable conditions here and the way things are going we might get snow even. Snow falls every ten years. Now zone 9a's minimum temperature is -6.7C or 20F, so far so good. Our average summer is 45C or 113F which if it wants to, it can go up to 47C some years. Now my father-in-law from San Jose area is here these days as a visiting professor and I can assure you he is feeling the cold these days and has started to hibernate but he cribs in summers? He cribs in winters that it is to cold and he cribs in summers that it is too hot?
Confused Confused Blinking . I just cannot figure out what is wrong with this zoning scheme of ours Shrug! . Can some one else explain this conundrum?
Regards,
Arif.

What is crib?

We don't get the summer heat that you get Arif, but it sounds like our winters may be similiar. Normal lows are in the 20°F for winter, but can get into the teens and very cold years we have gone down to 10°F. BRRRRRRRRR

Not sure about the upper ranges of heat tolerance, but I think these might do okay...
Salvia apiana is hardy to 12 degrees F
S. brandegeei hardy to 10-15 degrees F
S. clevelandii hardy to the low teens F
S. leucophylla says no damage in containers at 8 degrees F

So there's a chance that some of the salvias from arid regions here would grow there.
I could be wrong...

Enjoy and it was not used with reference to babies and horses. It is accepted usage but who invented this word Shrug!
Sherry these Salvias are self seeding and from now on I will just use the plants as mulch by digging them in.

Arif.
