I have brought in all my birdhouses and plan to clean and repair them all. Many of them were obviously made to be used indoors, as all the paint has peeled off. I would like to repaint some or perhaps stain them. Does anyone know what paints/stains I should avoid and what ones are safe for birds. I would not do anything to the inside other than clean them out, this would just be on the outside. Thanks for any insight.

I've never repainted any of mine but I've always heard that you should never paint or stain the inside, and to use only environmentally safe paints/stains for the exterior.

Scroll down this page to the area titled Healthy Birdhouses for some tips regarding painting/staining: http://birding.about.com/od/bi...

Hmmm,
The one and only birdhouse I made with my brother got painted in blue with red roof.
This was a couple years back.
And we placed it high in a pear tree in the yard.
I haven't seen a single bird in it, but dad says some birds have been checking it recently.
Could it be the position? The fact that it's "colorful" and doesn't really resemble a hollow? The design? Too big, too small ....???
