I enjoyed spending yesterday among the lilies at Burnie, seeing familiar faces of the Northwest Tasmanian Lilium Society. Sadly it was a very thin season on the benches due to health and harsh season, but I still saw some inspiring flowers and learned things I didn't even know there was to learn... so thanks to all the Northwest folk for putting in another dedicated effort to share their love of lilies.

The main hall (another room contained some single flowers, a live lily painting demonstration, informative videos and floral art):

Van Dieman Quality Bulbs put on a commercial display, featuring another example of L. lankongense, and Lankon, among others:

Thumb of 2013-01-06/dellac/a81d05 Thumb of 2013-01-06/dellac/c6c2e9

The darker variant of Lankon can be seen to the top left on L. lankongense, and there's a lovely stem of Red Velvet there too.

Not the greatest pics, but a couple of the darker Lankon stand out. I didn't see the lighter variant, but apparantly Van Dieman have them, and they're a better flower than the others.

Completing the display, three orientals from Van Dieman (colour representation doesn't do the first one any justice - it's much cleaner than portrayed):

Time for another fridge! nodding I hope this week is kinder. The wind took away most of the last asiatic flowers that were clinging here. Doug F. is determined to be well for Claremont, and took a rest from entering at Burnie (one of the reasons stems were down). It might just be one of those summers - extreme challenges for folk and flowers!

On the other hand, L. longiflorum seemed to have a happy year and was well represented, with lots of large stems... but I forgot to photograph them all together!

I love the last one - a NOID longiflorum hybrid... anyone have any ideas what it is?

I'm enjoyin' this! Show 'em all--we love it! Whoever grew those Asiatics in the first pic certainly didn't have a problem with heat--those are absolutely beautiful. Interesting note about LanKon. I can see where the lighter version might be more dainty while the darker version is more striking. I like the lighter version of Anthony's, which ever version that is.

Let's see some more! Edit Note: I've been watching news videos of your wildfires and smoke with the heat!

Egads, Anthony - do you want to employ some lily gardening help to get through the crazy spell?

Still hazy here... lots of smoke. And it's just the start of the fire season.

More pics - including Silk Road - coming up Hurray!

hehe - here's petitioning for all lily addicts to get paid summer holidays to ease their incurable 'condition'! Big Grin

Incidentally, we went to the Botanical Gardens today, and saw an awesome display of OTs and, (I think), tetra trumpets filling the conservatory with gorgeous perfume. A poster for Claremont too. Is that your tireless work Anthony? I'll get to posting some of those photos in another thread. But generally... the Gardens are showing signs of stress and damage from the extreme weather Sad

Love the full stem trumpet photos. The color and substance of the first one is interesting. Do you remember the description, by chance?
