I should clarify that to specify the King Alfreds...they're just so 'in your face' somehow....

And I, on the other hand, only have King Alfreds. I love their burst of energy in the spring. I am working on adding in some others, but have in the past been disappointed with the fancier cultivars. The doubles in particular don't work for me -- too much rain, they just throw their heads in the mud.

I tend to be careful with yellows...some I like, some not. I love whites and wispy things that speak softly.. King Alfreds, to me, stand up quite sturdy and yell.....lol...

Ha ha, I can go with the yelling idea. Here's a photo of some shouting, "Look at me, look at me!" In my rain-drenched winter grayness, they are truly a spot of early sunshine. I do understand how they might be a bit much for folks fortunate to have year-round blooms and sunnier skies, though.

They are pretty there. There's a cemetery in a small mountain town near here and I love cemeteries, but someone has gone and scattered daffys all over the hill ....and they're naturalizing...and I know everyone else thinks it's beautiful.....and I always think they've gone and ruined a peaceful cememtery....lol.

Here's the same bed after the daffs have died down. You may like this combo better - a bit more soothing to the eye. I did have a nice variegated dogwood in the hole next to the corydalis, which I've since replaced but don't have a picture with that in it. Adds a bit of lightness to the bed.

You can grow all the lush stuff that I can't down here. With my determination to cut back severely on water, my place is not looking as green as it did...sadly...That's what I love most about the Northwest...green, green, green.

Seems like I'm always waiting for the next thing that smells good to bloom. The loquat....flowers not so showy, but wow, the scent...and it makes the bees very happy....

These photos actually were taken in December, but stayed in the camera until now. It's a good thing I took some pictures then. Now a lot of things have been ruined by rain and by all of the unexpected frost. So, here's what was blooming a month ago.

Lots and lots of camellias. Here's a sampling of some:

Lots of hellebores and narcissus:

Some fuchsias and this early-blooming Rhododendron 'Trewithen Orange':

And to think I was excited to see little nubs poking out of the ground today... Beautiful blooms and so fortunate to have such a long season.

I do have a lot of salvias, but not as many as I did have. I had a small nursery specializing in salvia, doing the local farmers' market, but the market wasn't doing well and my back wasn't either...lol..I've let a lot of the large beds go because it's too much work and our water costs are so high. I do have certain ones I won't give up and will go with us when we move and I'll still plan on using the natives, etc. I tend to like the large, shrubby, very drought tolerant ones that do well here, but I love them all.
