I read an article about that Salvia 'Dancing Flame.' Its coloring is caused by a virus. I have had seeds germinate of it and they are not the variegated form. I rooted cuttings of it easily though. The virus has never spread to my other plants though. I have an Evening Primrose I found in my mom's yard with the same leaf coloring. It is awesome too!

Toni, I wonder if you could grow them in pots and move them into the garage for winter?

Lynn - No room in my garage w/all my garage crap & cars. Plus I don't have a heated garage.. when I used to drink soda, I would store it in the garage right next to the kitchen door... until 2 12pks of coke exploded from the cold... And if I put 'em in the basement, I'd forget to water them. And I don't do well with potted plants.. I kill them regularly. That's why I like things in the ground. But, you know, if I can get grafted roses that are for zone 7 to grow for me, why couldn't I get these? Other than finding them.. *that's* the hard part!

Maybe lots of mulch, once the ground freezes?
Don't blame you about not wanting to story container plants over winter.

Lynn - that's what I do with my roses. Everything's buried ridiculously deep & then I pile the mulch on top. For the past week, we've had wonderful above-normal temperatures (50-60s), but I needed a picture of a rose graft, so I checked out some of my roses in the front yard (over 130). The mulch is still frozen solid & I have 3" of ice in a shaded spot in my yard.

Wow, to both the frozen mulch and 130 roses. That is impressive.

Lynn - loll... that's just in the front yard. Back yard has over 200. Zero grass, only roses & shrubs. I really need to map it out.. and very few are multiples of the same rose.

I'm really a big fan of Agastache and Salvia since I grew them from seed last year and experienced all the hummingbirds hanging around the deck where they grew. I didn't know to look for "bulbs" under my Salvia Patens Blue Angel so they just perished. Right now I have about 50 seedlings under lights so that I can enjoy them "en masse".

Have a blurred close up from last year when I had only about 3 seedlings survive.Thumb of 2013-01-25/Roses_R_Red/9ed3f0

Flowers By The Sea states 32 inches and I'd say that's about right. I thought they were higher, but I always have them in containers.
