I uncovered a bed of semps today in mpls and saw a Golden Nugget staring back at me with hot pink coloring. The rest of the bed (approximately 200 plants) also looked good. Has spring sprung ?

I have a couple more beds to uncover from the snow so they can dry out with the upcoming unseasonal warm and sunny weather. No doubt, we will get another dose of winter weather but the near future looks wonderful.

Hmm. I don't know. I think spring has sprung, but is very unstable. Temps just jump around doing weird things Confused

Hurray! Wahoo. Looking good Rj. Such a beautiful site to see.

John isn't it exciting, the first glimpses of our much loved semps.

Alex we had three days this week in the 60's. Today we have cooled back down to 40's & 50's for the next week.

We had a good amount of snow in here in CT this year and my semps were covered for a few months. Snow has finally melted and it sure is nice to see them again.

Lynn, my tray of your teeny tiny semps looks untouched by winter. Tough little guys!

Jesse, that is such a happy site. The best way for semps to winter, a covering of snow. Those should all take off growing like crazy with the arrival of warm/sunny weather. What fun it will be to watch them as they wake up from winter slumber.

I have a semp with 7 or 8 rows of mushy leaves (i.e. rotting) and 3 or 4 rows of promising tiny new growth in center. No chicks and variety unknown. But I want to save it because its in a bed where I put my favorites. What should I do ?

5 to 6 inches of snow today in mpls.

John, was it in the ground?
Clean all the bad parts away. Replant in a pot and keep it dry. No watering. Put it in a cool, dry place. When the weather warms up and dries out you can replant it.
Can you show us before and after photos? Hurray!

When the snow melts and you can get at them, remove the mush leaves carefully and add top dressing tucking under them as best you can. You want the prevent them lower leaves from sitting on wet soil as much as possible. Crushed granite or small pebbles work well as a top dressing. I get 50 pound bags of chicken grit at Tractor Supply for $9 a bag.

Thanks. I don't currently have the capacity to take pictures and post (actually I just don't know how).

I wanted to review the pictures of your semp beds in your back yard. Can you tell me which thread those appeared ?

John I'm not sure where those photos are posted. Some are in the Hybridizing Clinic threads.
Here are a couple of beds.

Nice, RJ. Your Green Wheel was cared for better than mine!

I have a lot of transplanting to do from these troughs this spring! I planted way too many in each of these.

Rj, your 'Green Wheel' should make a nice colony this year. 'Gold Nugget' should also improve for you this year. It took me awhile to get my 'Gold Nugget' going, but once it got a good root system going it remained nice year round.

Whoa, Jesse those really have filled in. Thumbs up
