This is the dips at four months old, some are as tall as the pipes (about 18 inchs) The daylilies to the left are my sons tets, planted a month later and not near as large.

This is the first bed of tets planted, you can see a little frost burn from two nights in the 20s.

This is the last bed of tets planted, these are in a box.
you can see the difference a couple of weeks makes by there size
Will see about 75% bloom from all of these dips and tets before they are a year old.

These are sixteen months pulled from the seedling field this
pass October and put in the hybridizing area.

These will be three years old this year and are lined out for increase
for possible registration this fall. You can see at the end of the box
where the robins have been.

Wow, very nice. I was thinking mine were doing pretty good. Not so much now. I do think I will get blooming tho, at least I still have hope.

No matter how much red pepper spray I put on them, I cannot get the squirrels from digging them up. Its a major problem here. I loose over 1/2 to them. I havent decided what to do next season, since the seeds get under your skin, like an addiction, Im not sure I can not at least try. I have such little sun, I should probably just stick to buying the plants I like, and nix the seeds.

How many seedlings do you plant? Can you put up some kind of netting to keep them out sort of like the ones for birds?

Fred, your beds of plants simply amaze me. So neat, healthy, and looking soooo good.

Amazing! My seedlings that were from seed put in fall of 2011 are so, so tiny compared to yours. They had a really rough summer last year, being over grown with weeds and with the hot dry weather. I will be lucky to see bloom at 4 years old.

Can't even imagine having them grow as fast, green and lush as yours are!

Pam, try bird netting. I have to put it around and over my seedling beds to keep the quail out, and it also keeps the squirrels out. I put one of my seedling beds right in the middle of the squirrel runway, and they just go around it now. I do know that they used to hide peanuts and walnuts in this area, but they haven't touched it since putting up the bird netting. You can get garden staples and tack the netting down to the ground, so that they can't crawl under. That's what I did, and it worked great.

Very nice Fred! It amazes me that folks in the south are seeing growth like this and still digging and planting. Just starting seeds in the house, first trays are up about 2 inches. They'll be planted outside in May and around 90% will bloom summer 2014. When will you begin to see this years first scapes?

Thanks everyone. The size of the dips have really surprised me, all are UF crosses from good parents.
We are overrun with squirrels also because of living with woods on all four sides and no one hunting them anymore. I do not have trouble with them digging up the plants, but the will bury acorns in the beds on occasion. I have more trouble with the birds than the squirrels. I do use milorganite to keep the rabbits out, this may be keeping the squirrels out also?

Pam, when I lived in a townhome and had a container garden, I foiled the squirrels by putting mesh over the top of the pots. I would think you could do the same thing in a standard bed. Use rabbit mesh, not chicken wire - the holes in the mesh are big enough for foliage/scapes to reach through, but squirrels can't dig through it.

Sorry Char I missed you question, I will see the first scapes about April 1st.

April 1st.. I won't see scapes coming up until June on the earlies. Some day I will have to make a trip south during bloom season.
