Seed Starting: Breaking Dormancy

By Joannabanana
January 15, 2013

Breaking dormancy of a seed is like waking it up from a sleep. The four key requirements are water, oxygen, light and temperature. There are a few techniques that will increase the germination percentage and help control timing of germination. Basically, water and oxygen need to penetrate the seed coat to initiate the break of dormancy. Some seeds need a combination of water, oxygen, light and/or set temperature.

Of course, my seeds were still encased in the seed pods, which might have made a difference?

Well, I just put some 2001 rose mallow seeds into soil (this was one of the first seed packet I received at my first seed swap - I guess I was holding on to these as a reminder of how I got into the world of hoarding plants & seeds). We'll see if these sprout after all these years.

I also have other older seeds which need to be sown. I think I'll throw these out on the soil and see what comes up (the front bed is bare since foundation plants were removed for leveling).

Woofie, the salpiglossis, schizanthus, & nicotiana you sent me germinated Hurray! but they may not survive since we are having another warm winter.

I love that pic :-)) Now that IS a dedicated winter sowing! IIRC the jugs are cut in two, seeded and then put back together with tape.

When I first started wintersowing I did over 80 jugs the first couple of years. Now I'm down to a dozen or so.
