Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

FDA Stops Sale of Pet Food Due to "Grossly Insanitary Conditions"

Bravo Packing Performance Dog Label March 2021
Bravo Packing Dog Food Recall — March 2021
Thumb of 2022-03-29/crawgarden/106e19
March 28, 2022 — Bravo Packing of Carney's Point, N.J., has been ordered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to stop selling, manufacturing and distributing pet food due to (among other violations) "grossly insanitary conditions".

A Federal judge has "entered a consent decree against" Bravo Packing due to violations of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act).

Previous Bravo Packing Recalls
Reported by The Dog Food Advisor

Dog Food Advisor has previously alerted readers about 4 recall events involving Bravo Packing:

Bravo Packing Expands Dog and Cat Food Recall (3/17/2021)

FDA: Do Not Feed Performance Dog Raw Pet Food (9/26/2019)
Performance Dog Pet Food Recall (9/13/2018)
Historic Legal Action

This legal ruling marks the first permanent injunction against an animal food manufacturer for violating modern public safety standards in history.

What Caused This Action?

According to Dr. Steven Solomon, director of FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine:

"The FDA has taken this action to protect public health because, despite multiple inspections, notifications of violations, and recalls, this firm continued to operate under insanitary conditions and produce pet food contaminated with harmful bacteria. We will not tolerate firms that put people or animals at risk and will take enforcement actions when needed."

FDA Warnings and Inspections

The FDA conducted inspections in 2019 and 2021 and issued a warning letter to the facility in 2020.

During these inspections, the FDA found evidence of significant food safety violations including grossly insanitary conditions and the failure to follow good manufacturing practices regulations for animal food.

Multiple samples of finished raw pet food products collected during the inspections tested positive for Salmonella.

Pet food that is contaminated with Salmonella can lead to illness in both the pets consuming the food, as well as humans, who handle the food and care for the pets.

Some of these finished samples as well as environmental samples from the two inspections also tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes."

FDA Warns Dog Food Maker Due to Safety Violations – Multiple Brands

Evolve Chicken and Rice Dog Food by Sunshine Mills
Tested positive for aflatoxin

Important — This Is Not a Recall

May 15, 2022 — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Warning Letter to Sunshine Mills, Inc., of Red Bay, Alabama due to significant safety violations. The letter was originally issued to the company on March 7, 2022, but was not made public by the FDA until April 18, 2022.

Sunshine Mills Logo

Sunshine Mills produces multiple brands of dog food and treats. However, the FDA did not include a complete list of products affected by its warning letter.

What Caused the Warning?

FDA inspections were performed on various dates in 2021 and revealed violations of the FDA's Current Good Manufacturing Practice requirements for animal food, which caused the maker's products to be adulterated.

Sunshine Mills Brands

The following brands are produced by Sunshine Mills. Due to the incomplete nature of the FDA's report, there's no way to know which brands are linked to this FDA warning.

Evolve
Nurture Farms
Triumph
Veterinary Select
Paula Deen Home Cookin'
Meaty Treats
Sportsman's Pride
Hunter's Special
Pup Corn Plus
Pet Life
Crunchin' Bones
Dr. Dental Fresh Chews
Other Brands Affected

Other products may also be affected. That's because Sunshine Mills "co-packs" food and treat products for a number of other (unspecified) brands.

However, since pet food makers are not required to disclose sub-contractor information to consumers, there's no way to know what other brands may be affected.

Sunshine Mills Recall History

The following list includes all dog food recalls related to Sunshine Mills through May 15, 2022.

Six Dog Food Brands Recalled Due to Dangerous Mold Toxin (7/29/2021)
Sunshine Mills Recalls Multiple Dog Food Brands (6/3/2021)
15 Pet Food Brands Recalled Due to High Levels of Aflatoxin (10/9/2020)
Sunshine Mills Recalls Multiple Dog Food Brands Due to Aflatoxin (9/3/2020)
Sunshine Mills Recalls Nature's Menu Dog Food (8/25/2020)
Dangerous Levels of Vitamin D Discovered in Several Dog Food Brands (12/7/2018)
Evolve, Sportsman's Pride, and Triumph Dog Food Recall (11/28/2018)
Giant and Martin's Recall Nature's Promise Dog Food (11/21/2018)
Partial List of
Inspection Findings

FDA Investigators noted evidence of significant violations of its Current Good Manufacturing Practice requirements. A partial sampling of the inspector's findings includes:

"…your firm's laboratory tested a sample of finished dog food kibble, Evolve Chicken and Rice Dog Formula… and detected an elevated aflatoxin level of 32.7 ppb. This is an indication that you failed to implement your ingredient testing preventive control, resulting in the use of an ingredient containing elevated levels of aflatoxin."

"…you failed to follow the manufacturer's mycotoxin test kit instructions, as well as your firm's SOPs… regarding sample preparation for incoming grain analysis."

"You failed to maintain animal food contact surfaces to protect animal food from being contaminated…"

"You failed to keep your plant clean and in good repair to prevent animal food from becoming adulterated…"

Full FDA Warning Letter

The warning letter continues by documenting additional violations.

Symptoms in humans may include fever, headache, muscle aches, stiff neck, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.

The Raw Frozen Primal Patties are sold in flexible packaging in the freezer at select pet stores.

Primal Pet Foods has temperature tracking devices on all shipments of frozen product to ensure storage requirements are met while being transported.

This product should be kept frozen until a pet parent is ready to use it.

August 5, 2022

Fast Facts

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is cautioning pet owners not to feed their pets certain lots of Darwin's Natural Pet Products raw cat food after samples from these lots tested positive for Salmonella. These foods have been associated with cases of illness in three kittens in a single household.
Darwin's Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Antibiotic & Grain Free Chicken Recipe for Cats, Lot 9116, manufactured on May 2, 2022.
Darwin's Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Antibiotic & Grain Free Turkey Recipe for Cats, Lot 9121, manufactured on May 4, 2022.
The products are sold in white and clear plastic packages with blue and green labeling. Each pack weighs two pounds and consists of four separate units. The lot codes are on the front lower left unit of the package.
If you have these lots of Darwin's Natural Pet Food, or you can't be sure of the lot code of the products you have, throw them away. Do not feed them to your pets.
The FDA is issuing this alert because these lots of Darwin's Natural Pet Products cat food represent a serious threat to human and animal health.
Salmonella can affect both human and animal health. People with symptoms of Salmonella infection should consult their health care providers. Consult a veterinarian if your pet has symptoms of Salmonella infection.
What is the problem?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is cautioning pet owners not to feed their pets two lots of Darwin's Natural Pet Food because products from these lots tested positive for Salmonella.

These products are Darwin's Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Antibiotic & Grain Free Chicken Recipe for Cats, Lot 9116, manufactured on May 2, 2022; and Darwin's Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Antibiotic & Grain Free Turkey Recipe for Cats, Lot 9121, manufactured on May 4, 2022. These products are manufactured by Arrow Reliance Inc., doing business as Darwin's Natural Pet Products, and are sold online direct to consumers.

The FDA collected and analyzed unopened samples of products from these two lots after receiving a report of illness in three kittens in a single household that had consumed the food and developed diarrhea. A stool sample from one of the kittens tested positive for Salmonella. A fourth kitten did not eat the food and did not become sick.

Whole genome sequencing of the Salmonella in the two products revealed that the turkey product contained Salmonella Typhimurium, while the chicken product contained Salmonella Typhimurium and Kentucky.

Why is the FDA issuing this alert?

The FDA is issuing this alert because these two lots of Darwin's Natural Pet Products cat food represent a serious threat to human and animal health. Because these products are sold and stored frozen, the FDA is concerned that people may still have them in their possession and feed them to their pets.

The FDA recommended that Arrow Reliance Inc. voluntarily recall these products and notify the public, but the company has not done so.

What do I need to do?

If you have either of the two Darwin's Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Cat Foods listed above, stop feeding it to your pets and throw it away in a secure container where other animals, including wildlife, cannot access it.

Consumers who have had this product in their homes should clean refrigerators/freezers where the product was stored and clean and disinfect all bowls, utensils, food prep surfaces, pet bedding, litter boxes, toys, floors, and any other surfaces that the food or pet may have had contact with. Clean up the pet's feces in places where people or other animals may become exposed. Consumers should thoroughly wash their hands after handling the product or cleaning up potentially contaminated items and surfaces.

What is Salmonella and what are the symptoms of Salmonella infection?

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness and death in humans and animals, especially those who are very young, very old, or have weak immune systems. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people infected with Salmonella can develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Most people recover without treatment, but in some people, the diarrhea may be so severe that they need to be hospitalized. In these patients, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream and then to other body sites unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. Consult your health care provider if you have symptoms of Salmonella infection.

Pets do not always display symptoms when infected with Salmonella, but signs can include vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, loss of appetite and/or decreased activity level. If your pet has these symptoms, consult a veterinarian promptly. You should also be aware that infected pets can shed the bacteria in their feces without showing signs of being sick.

Why is the FDA concerned about Salmonella in pet food?

Pet foods contaminated with Salmonella are of particular public health importance because they can affect both human and animal health. Pets can get sick from Salmonella and may also be carriers of the bacteria and pass it on to their human companions without appearing to be ill. The FDA is aware of cases in which humans and/or animals have gotten sick from exposure to Salmonella-contaminated pet foods (Salmonella-human casesExternal Link Disclaimer, Salmonella-kitten, Salmonella-kitten, dogExternal Link Disclaimer).

Once Salmonella gets established in the pet's gastrointestinal tract, the animal can shed the bacteria when it has a bowel movement, and the contamination can continue to spread. Because animals can shed the bacteria when they have bowel movements, it's particularly important to clean up the animal's feces in yards or parks where people or other animals may become exposed, in addition to cleaning items in the home.

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requires that all animal foods, like human foods, be safe to eat, produced under sanitary conditions, contain no harmful substances, and be truthfully labeled. Refrigeration or freezing does not kill Salmonella. Pet owners who choose to feed raw pet food should be aware of the risks associated with these products.

How can I report a pet illness?

People who think their pets have become ill after consuming contaminated pet food should first contact their veterinarians. Veterinarians who wish to have pets tested for Salmonella may do so through the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN Network) if the pet is from a household with a person infected with Salmonella.

The FDA encourages consumers to report complaints about pet food products electronically through the Safety Reporting Portal or by calling their state's FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinators.
