OK, I have 1 Austrian Copper that survived this last winter. It has two long long canes (about 3' long). How can I get it to produce more canes? Cut these canes back to the bud union? Seems kinda.. harsh. But I'd love to have at least 5-10 canes on this and let it crawl up my fence (I'd have to tie it off of course). Not to mention it'd keep my dogs from sticking their nose into that fence & harassing the neighbor's old dog & young puppy.

What do I do?

It's grafted? Ordinarily, I'd suggest sprinking a handful of epsom salts around the base. That stimulates the growth of new canes, but if it's grafted it might stimulate the rootstock instead. I've never grown Austrian Copper, but why don't you try just pruning it lightly? I don't think you should go all the way back to the bud union.

OK, took a picture of it this morning. I'm still heavily in the process of doing lots of construction (bricks, repairing fences, etc), so please forgive the mess. It actually only has 1 cane w/a few offshoots from that cane. It's the one that died (didn't survive the winter) that had the 2 canes.

How much epsom salts? My handful is probably a bit bigger than your handful. :)

The size of the hand doesn't matter, Toni. It's not like a food recipe. A little more or less makes very little difference. Just sprinkle some around the base and water it in.

That rose looks completely viable. I hope it grows into a monster for you.

I hope it grows into a monster, too. I saw one over at my M-I-L's covenant controlled, gated community (to keep rifraf like me out) that was a monster and totally just smothered in orange blooms.. I just had to get one when I saw it! M-I-L didn't know it was a rose. I figure that if it gets big enough, it'll take over that corner there & I can tie it to that fence to keep it going. Just can't stand the smell! Yuck!
