Hello,

I inherited a ton of beautiful irises from my beloved late grandmother. They began to bloom today, and my heart is full. My question for you iris experts: what breed of iris might my beauties be? All speculation appreciated.

Thanks,
Lindsay

I don't see any variegation in the leaves. Is there variegation?

It's a beauty! I looked up Iris pallida in the database and I am curious about the fact that no progeny is listed for it. Does it not hybridize with other iris species?

Oh, despite the database not listing its progeny, it does cross with other species. A list of them is here: https://wiki.irises.org/Spec/S... . Scroll down to see it.

I have a flower bed of NOID iris that look just like that one. They are the only iris I've never divided and continue to make tons of blooms each year. My Neighbor, Karen, told me that those irises were there, still very crowded looking when she bought her home 25 years ago.

I may however divide them this fall.
Not only people give others signs, but plants do too.

The Child Plant and Parentage fields only create hyperlinks for plants that have a cultivar name. Not sure why that is. It came up once in a discussion amongst the plant admins and Dave just said that species don't generate hyperlinks in those fields without getting into any real detail as to why. , I assume it's a technical issue.

Nonetheless, it's easy enough to find the plants that have Iris pallida listed in their parentage. Just type pallida in the Parentage box of the Advanced search engine and you'll get a long list:

https://garden.org/plants/grou...

Can be done for all of the other wild species that may have been used in iris hybridizing as well.

For what it's worth, Iris pallida was one of the foundational species used in the creation of bearded iris hybrids and the vast majority of them trace their ancestry back to it to one degree or another. There are exceptions, most of the early MDB's were derived from Iris pumila and it's relatives and have no genes from Iris pallida, I have Species X Iris (Iris 'Wine Dark Sea') growing in my garden and it doesn't trace to Iris pallida, etc.

Unfortunately, most hybridizers didn't keep breeding records until the 1930's or even later so, if you try to trace a plant's ancestry back to the original wild species, you usually hit a dead end long before you get there.

Hey, that's pretty nifty!

Thank You!

May I impose upon y'all to identify this beauty that appeared this morning? It's about 2 feet tall and has a slight fragrance.

The shape and colour suggest it's a historic (or maybe a seedling). Not one I recognise, I'm afraid, but maybe someone else will. Crossing Fingers!
