I did not realize it could be such a space hog. I have had plants for 5 years. BUT, I've moved them quite a bit in those five years (three house moves, several garden reorganizations). Perhaps they have never had a chance to get really settled in. I will be sure to keep an eye on them. Maybe take part out every year and stay ahead of them. Also, mine bloom for quite a long time. Interesting the variation people have had.

Jennifer, Welcome! What kind of Kniphofia do you have? Hopefully they will stay small, not all get that big. For the amount of ground space, this one of mine will take up, I should be able to think of something else with a good 'wow' factor. Green Grin!

(sending acorns!) Hurray! Hurray!

Found one tag. Just a generic tag. Says, "Some varieties may reach 5' height". Well, can't have it all with a bargain I guess.

I bought several of Terra Nova's "popsicle" Kniphofia this year. I left three of them in Gallon pots and all 3 are still green. Our winters here aren't that bad though. It got below 20 degrees just once or twice. I think these are pretty winter hardy. If I were further north, I'd probably be more concerned though.

I had to look at popsicle. They are a nice solution to the huge original plants from years back.
If I only had more room,on the otherhand they are just barely hardy here.
Creamsicle was my fave and Papya was second.

This is my Kniphofia sarmentosa growing in a container, started to make its buds in Feb 2013 and currently in bloom. I only got one bloom stalk, but it has another flower a bit half way below the main one.

Many plants that get BIG in the ground will quite happily adapt to container life and stay more compact.

And I did dig up one and pot it that hasn't gotten back into the ground so if I can keep in a container, all the better!

I didn't even know there were pale green ones...I just have an "old fashioned" big one.

I should show the whole plant. I really almost uprooted the entire thing..the blade-like leaves looks quite unruly as it continues to mature. But when the bloom came out I gave it a reprieve Smiling I got this plant initially as two little seedlings with a bloom in early Feb 2012.

Photo Feb 2012:

The whole plant this March 2013: oops..can't seem to make this photo upright..

And I always have to remember too that hummingbirds love them:

I am still learning in growing this plants. Just have to remember the plus side when I see the unruly leaves Big Grin

Oh I did have another kind of Kniphofia last year, called Kniphofia Hirsuta Fire Dance. This one was smaller and more compact..but I think I may have underestimated its drought tolerance..have effectively killed it. But I did get to see the blooms.

Another Kniphofia I have, though so far it has not made any bloom at all is called Kniphofia caulescens. I will post photos later on if and when it manages to make a bloom this year. So far, just leafy blade like leaves.
