Oh, oh! I found it! A link to Carol Eads hypertufa technique! Carol was an absolutely brilliant lady and amazing gardener who sadly is no longer with us. But here's a link to her ideas on making hypertufa planters:

Woofie I didn't realize she was a friend of yours, I am sorry for your loss, she seems fun! (and young!) Sad Peace to you
I love the link, I thought the "curing" process was far longer, and I like having such an easy recipe...
Photos when I'm doing them!
Cheers I tip my hat to you.

Ah, I only knew (and cherished) Carol through the original Dave's Garden, and the new owners of that site have ever so graciously deleted her extended farewell to us all. May the internet gods do unto the new owners as they deserve. My personal suggestions include boiling oil....... biased? Who? Me?

I am just so very thankful that another friend was kind enough to create a small memorial to Carol and that it's still available. (Thanks, Shawna!)

Woofie, I had forgotten Shawna's website. Thanks for remembering it!

When I visited there in '08, Carol's hypertufa pots had been used for years and were still outside right where she placed them when they were made. Plants were still growing in them. No doubt they are still now in Ava's garden. I'll see if I can find some more recent pictures I have of them. They withstood Alaska's weather very very well.

Here are some of Carol's hypertufa pots, notice the little 'feet' on the bottom, they keep the pot off the ground. We moved them from Carol's garden to her Memory garden beside her sister Ava's house, as per Carol's wishes. We left them planted as they were when Carol made them. Some are roundish, some are rectangular, depending on what she made them in.

Your question was a great one, Critterg. Most everybody loves hypertufa once they get involved in it.

And right about the 'feet'.

I made a couple a few years ago and painted the 'buttermilk - moss' mix on them, then placed them mostly in the shade. The moss grew on them, covered them in fact, and I gave them to a friend who'd just built a new home. She had lots of trees and wanted some fast shady landscaping. They are still there and I haven't made any since. You've made me want to make more. Smiling

In Carol's article she said you place them on while wet, and use the same material with a bit of water (like pottery - the water makes a 'slip' material which holds the 2 pieces in place when they dry) seems totally doable! Big Grin
Sharon I agree that its fun to get motivated to make something like this! And thank you for sharing this memorial, I love that we interact and touch people in ways which we never know - Carol's recipe and knowledge still being out there and inspiring people she never met is encouraging to me! Hurray!
Thanks folks!

Feeling ambitious? Arif says the beautiful red pedestal planters shown in this post are made of hypertufa. Big Grin

I'm a little late to the party, but here's the article I wrote on it: http://garden.org/ideas/view/g... I've been making hypertufa for years and none of them ever broke from being outside all winter.

I took pictures (for a tutorial) the last time I made a trough with feet and always planned on writing another article, but I never got around to it. In my method the feet are created in one piece with the pot. I'll try to do the tutorial sometime soon and post a link here.

Oh thanks so much for posting that link, Chris! Don't know how I missed that article. Lots of good suggestions in the comments section, too! Thumbs up I loved the look of the ones someone made using a basket for a mold!
