I just stumbled upon the most thorough treatment on how to propagate roses from cuttings that I have ever seen. Mel Hulse [was once] curator for the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, a garden with many thousands of rather rare and endangered rose cultivars posted it at Paul Barden's site:
