I just stumbled upon the most thorough treatment on how to propagate roses from cuttings that I have ever seen. Mel Hulse [was once] curator for the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, a garden with many thousands of rather rare and endangered rose cultivars posted it at Paul Barden's site:

Mel Hulse passed away back in Jan. 2008. Here is the announcement on GardenWeb which gives you a little background of his contributions to one of the largest rose collections in the world, a couple of pictures are included as well.

I've used this method many times, with far, far, more success than any other. I'm sold on it!
