Can anyone tell me if there is any special procedure if a person wants to name a daylily with a song title? I know it is frequently done, but not sure if you have to get the songwriter ok?

Also, I know it used to be that you could not have the last name of the daylily be a common name of another plant. John Rice wanted to name one after his wife, Annette Rice, but had to make it Annette's Magic instead. I think this has been changed since then, but I could not find anything about it on the AHS site.

Several years ago I know I tried to name a plant Lydia Rose and they wouldn't accept it because of the rose part being another flower.

Thanks, Michelle, that is what I was looking at yesterday, but did not find anything about songs or other plants, such as the example of Rice. Maybe I just didn't see it in the online rules?

I could be wrong, but I thought they changed that "other plant name" rule.

Thanks Fred - that seedling shows a variety of "pattern" faces at different times. Sometimes it is all dark purple with a pale purple edge that looks like a ribbon around it. Sometimes it spots like Jerry Hyatt does (except this is s dip)

There is a statement that it is the responsibility of the registrant to check ALL copyright issues and with song titles ( as a retired music teacher) I would advise you to check copyright for whatever song you are intending to use before you attempt to register a seedling with a song name. It is not the responsibility of AHS to research copyright issues if a person submits a name in violation of copyright. That should have been done before a cultivar is registered.

Ive got lots of names reserved, most have to do with songs, I guess I need to check that. NOW, for a flower to go with them. I have to keep them renewed every three years or so.
I know somebody has one this year named 'West End Girls'. Sorry I didnt think of that, but Ive now listened to the song a gazillion times. I cant imagine getting in trouble with a song title, they are just words. I can see if you used the song in advertising it or something. There are many great daylilies with song titles.

WEST END GIRLS is one of Jane Trimmer's new intros. I love the song also, and every time I see the name I just start singing that song...
