Hoping some one can ID this plant. I've never seen anything like it. The trunk is covered in spines.

Could be, Lynn. I can't enlarge the photo. It gets smaller rather than bigger. They appear very similar.

Yes, after comparing with some other photos, I think it is most likely Pachypodium menabeum too. Thumbs up .

I agree, Pachypodium lamerei. P. menabeum is a synonym.

Sorry about the size of the photo, it was sent by email from a friend. I think she had dial-up and made the photo size small for easy transmission. Next time I go to visit her I will take my camera. I will post the new photos as soon as I have them. She did say the trunk is smooth with spines in bundles of 3.
But I do think this is the correct ID. Thank you.

Pachypodium menabeum is listed on the Plant List as accepted, with no synonyms.

http://www.theplantlist.org/tp...

Pachypodium lamerei is given only one synonym, Pachypodium lamerei var. ramosum.

http://www.theplantlist.org/tp...

Which source gives Pachypodium menabeum as a synonym Lin? I see ITIS does give it as a synonym of Pachypodium lamerei.

http://www.itis.gov/servlet/Si...

In 2002, Röösli and Hoffmann found a curious pachypodium during their annual winter expedition to Madagascar. At first it was attributed to P. lamerei, then it was thought to be a robust form of P. ambongense. Finally, comparison with the type specimen from the herbarium at the Natural History Museum in Paris has confirmed that this is P. menabeum, a species with a very restricted range in central Madagascar. A recent account of the rediscovery of this species and its relationships was published in KuaS 55 (10): 274–280 (2004). An article in Bradleya 22: 85–130 (2004) provides a more thorough review of all of the Madagascan pachypodia. We offer HBG 91561, Röösli & Hoffmann 202, from seed collected at Bekopaka, Madagascar
