Mine got so big and top-heavy with foliage they kept blowing over. I had to take them out. Or, it might have been the raccoons tipping them over.

I've now put in some little dwarf varieties, but they haven't really got going yet. Hoping they like it. I keep the pots so that the rhizomes are fairly near the surface of the water.

Update. The Dwarfs are blooming! The regular one's are so tall in there, I worried it would shade the dwarfs but apparently they adapted.

Cannas compete with other growing things in my ponds. It's too bad the raccoons got all the fish this past spring. I miss them. Sad

I wish I could get more color. In a shady yard, we are lucky to get the flowers we get in our yard. I'll take 'em!

This is my first year for dwarf cannas in my pond. They are starting to bloom a bright orange (Calypso). I'm wondering how to overwinter these babies. I have purple Japanese iris in the pond and just cut them back and drop them bare root down 2 feet. Could I do this with the canna?

I have to bring the tubers inside ( unheated attached garage) here in zone 5
Does it freeze where you are?

I have cannas in the ground that do fine here in zone 7, and others in pots that I put in the garage once they start to die down from the cold. The rhizomes seem pretty tough when dormant and handle the garage fine without water or light all winter.

Cannas are beautiful but take up a lot of space for a few days blooms. Separating them I used a pick axe to break thru the tough intertwining roots.
I’m so busy... “I don’t know if I found a rope or lost a horse.”

Very pretty. My fish gobble up frogbit and nibble on azolla until it falls apart in green crumbles that sink to the bottom or clog the filters. The hyacinth usually outgrows them, but not this year--they tore it all to pieces in two ponds.

My cannas always seem to be in constant bloom once they start in mid summer until frost, but that may be a function of the size of the clumps.

Got some new frogbit and water lettuce. That meant I had to buy an aquarium to try to winter them over in the greenhouse. Read goldfish liked to eat them. So far, so good! They are leaving them alone.

I think cannas are grown around here at least, more for their height and bold foliage than specifically for their blooms.
