Growing Roses in My Utah Garden

By Paul2032
February 10, 2013

Roses are considered to be challenging by many gardeners, but here in Utah I have found their care to be quite easy. The rewards during bloom season far exceed the effort needed in order to have a lovely rose garden. A near perfect bloom brings me great pleasure.

Your roses are just beautiful.

I think I'm a fickle gardener too but it seems you've definitely found your passion.

I've never grown roses this gorgeous.

Thanks Vic....my current passions are roses, iris, and hosta. At this point in my life I had better be happy with those three.

This is soo beautiful Paul! I used to have a few roses now I'm down to just a few! But my garden was never as beautiful as yours and Zuzu!

Thank you for this glimpse into your garden, Paul. You have taken such beautiful photos of your roses.

Now that seven years have gone by, do you still have the same favourites?

I think fragrance is also high on your list of desirability. Have you tried the white floribunda, 'Margaret Merril'? What are some of your most fragrant ones?

It's nice to hear from you Nora. I haven't planted any thing new for a few years. My Grandsons who dug holes for me grew up and got jobs and girlfriends but I did luck into a young brother and sister in my neighborhood who did yard for me last summer and they are coming today for the first time this season. My roses continue to please me. One problem last spring was that many deer wintered in my neighborhood and as the roses started to put on nice fresh spring growth the deer had a feast. I have some repellent ready but have't used it yet. Not as many deer this winter. The young woman that helped me last summer deadheaded once a week and the roses bloomed all summer. We all like different things. I like classic well formed HT's. Fragrance is a bonus. Some I enjoy each year are Granada, New Zealand, Aromatherapy, Veteran's Honor.....I could go on and on. One blessing I have in my rose passion is that there is a Nursery/Garden, Sunriver in my area and they grow lots or roses so I enjoy my own all season and go regularly to see the roses in bloom at Sunriver. If I were younger I would have some new roses but time moves on. I'll look through some files today and look for fresh pictures taken the last year or two and add them......
