Welcome! To ATP Lauri, this site is the best all around, great people and info.

I've actually been to Twisp, mind you that was over 30 years ago, I imagine there have been many changes since then. I think there used to be a bumper sticker that said, "Where the hell is Twisp". Hilarious!

Chick Day! With the help of my granddaughter, we have a dozen little peepers. If all goes well, they should be laying sometime this summer.

I think we got about 5-6 different breeds, some have the top knots and others have fluffy feet. I just gave granddaughter a number and let her pick and choose. Hoping for a rooster in the mix, but if not there are always free roosters posted at the feed store. So far my dog has been patiently hanging out at the coop, drooling and licking her chops! I've let her sniff a couple and reinforce that these are her new little friends. They won't be out in the open until they've put on some size and have gotten their real feathers, then we'll see how Frankie actually responds to them. Hoping for world peace.

How totally cute Deb!!! Hurray! Its amazing that they begin laying in the first summer! How fun!! I can't remember what breed your dog is? I think boxer mix? May work out, it would be worse if s/he were some type of herding dog Thumbs down (although I've heard that you can train them to herd more gently with patience! Sticking tongue out ) Congrats on the flock? Brood (ha, had to google it!)
Cheers I tip my hat to you.

Greg, yeah, boxer/shepard mix. Frankie's OK with the neighbor's free range chickens so I'm hopeful once my little chickies get some size to them, they will look less like a snack. We had a Rhode Island Red rooster years back who was best buddies with our dog at the time - the rooster would pick through Max's long shaggy coat looking for bugs. Another dog-bird combo we enjoyed was Rosie (medium sized mutt) and Hilbert (duck) who used to mock-fight each other constantly, never drawing blood but what a racket they would make.

Ran across granddaughter Peyton's 'key' to the chicken names - Violett, Blossom, Bubbles, Roto, Sissary, Mojojojo, Karen, Scram, Bulls, and the Blonde Squad (3 yellows), along with a general description. We'll see if she can still match them up next time she comes down.

I know that they look very different once they've grown up some and have their "real" feathers!! nodding How fun Deb! I'm sure your dog should be great! Also I know you can get roosters easy because they're not allowed within Seattle, and so often you can't tell until they're old enough so people are getting rid of them often (like you said!) I tip my hat to you. Hurray!
Enjoy! Group hug

I opened the coop the other day too quickly and one of the chicks fell out (must have been leaning against the door). Frankie was of course at my feet and she was 'on it' but just kind of trapped it between her paws as I yelled at her to leave it. Chick of course ran in frantic circles (like a chicken with her head cut off..), but I caught it and returned it to its buddies. No harm, although everyone's heart rate was certainly elevated...

(singing)
"You say Nugina and I say Nuggini ..."

I was thrilled to find that "Mangetout" snap peas can also be called "Mangiatutto". ("Eat it all").

Also, if you grow 'Carouby de Maussane' Snow Pea/Snap Pea in Italy, they have the mouth-filling name: 'Pisello Rampicante Gigante Svizzero'.

By the time I finish saying that, I'm hungry again!

I think the name is is the eye of the be-grower.

I love Italian, its so sing songy! Maybe if I lived there and heard it all the time I'm get tired of it, but Mangiatutto is a great word! It sound fun and it says exactly what it means! The other name you wrote? Only figure "gigante" means gigantic! Shrug!

Yes, it rolls around my tongue and sings! "Mangiatutto!!" I even have to wave my hands as I say it.

I'm guessing at some of this:

Pisello - - - pea

Rampicante - "rampant" - climbing

Gigante - - - gigantic

Svizzero - - - Swiss, not French!

That's funny, because everyone agrees this was developed in Maussane, near Avignon
in southern France. Maybe when Italians think of snow (snow peas), they think of Switzerland?

I still have no idea who or what "Carouby" is.
