For those “thorny” re-potting chores when a cactus, bromeliad, rose or other sticky plant outgrows its pot, try this.

It's one of those "why didn't I think of this?" ideas. Thank you.

Absolutely clever and for me, timely. I have a selection of bromeliads in need of repotting. Thanks much for the great idea!

Any great ideas for dividing? {{{ouch}}}

Pod, you'll need long gloves and a big knife.

I was thinking maybe a machete with a long handle and longer blade. I am not sure I'll divide it, maybe try your idea to just pot it up. Thanks much...

Wonderful tip! Thanks Bubbles.

Kristi, do you have one of those electric knives with a set of blades that are about a foot long? That would work to saw the roots apart. Otherwise, see if you can turn it upside down or on it's side with the top hanging over the edge of a table, and just keep massaging the root ball until the individual ones come out.

I love that idea too! Thanks Mary. I know I must need a new electric knife for the kitchen and the old one will be perfect for that use. I've used a drywall saw in the past but that is "too hands on" for these types of plants. lol

Now you two know that the electric knife was really invented for gardening chores. If it had been meant for meat and bread, well, oh never mind. It's a perfect "plant separator."

Pod, use your old one. You know you don't use it for the Christmas ham. Whistling

Bread... every week I bake bread and I love it to slice it neatly but DH did comment a while back that it seemed to be getting dull so I know I must need a new one. No??? lol

You bet ~ it is on my list. I'm thinking a new one for the GH and then when DH buys a new one for the house I will have the old one for a back up.

Oh, and to think I passed up so many electric knives at yard sales! I'll keep an eye out this summer. Hilarious!
