Gnat and White Fly Traps

By sewNsow

I make sticky traps to catch gnats and white flies around my plants. Using yellow paper saucers and plastic lids, plus a small foam brush, I coat the saucers and lids with an auto oil additive called MOTOR HONEY. It is very inexpensive, comes in a small bottle, and can be bought wherever motor oil is sold. I hang the lids and saucers with a hook made from wire or a paper clip. I've even dabbed it on pot edges to trap pesky gnats. It works! Don't put it on too heavily or it will drip.

I'm curious though ---- why yellow saucers & lids?

Whitefly are strongly attracted by yellow color. So it is possible to imagine different traps using this color.

You can buy 25 for $3-4 much easier than making them.
Probably cheaper than buying plates and a toxic automotive product.
Gardening is cheaper than therapy and you get tomatoes. ~Author Unknown

I was at a hobby greenhouse workshop a few weeks ago and a lady there had said that she buys the lime green or yellow poster paper at the Dollar Store and rubs vaseline on it. Same idea as yours SewNsow. She said the bugs fly into it and get stuck in the vaseline. You can make it different sizes and shapes too

the one year I had a bunch of gnats show up all at once.. I took scotch tape and hung it from the top shelf hanging down.. that worked pretty good believe it or not

Well actually, the toxicity goes nowhere but the waste basket.I've used vaseline & other sticky stuff but this particular substance applies with foam brush easily. Most of my plastic is recycled food container lids.I just happened on the yellow saucers at a friends party. Also if I happen to get my sleeve or hair against these it isn't nearly as unpleasant as the regular sticky traps. And I had quite a time getting a regular purchased trap off the cat one day.

I took old 3 in. window blinds last year painted with JD yellow "on sale a Tractor supply $1.00 a can. Smeared with Vaseline. I had the worst year last year for white flys, never seen so many. This did catch some but seemed to me it cought more dirt and dust than anything.
