I got my epi cutting last Apr 2010. I have read that I should put it in a small well draining container, keep it snug and that it loves being moist. It does make sense since most succulents like to start in smaller containers first, but had to readjust my method of watering since, normally I really wait for my succulents to go dry before I water.
So to help me out, I got this terracotta water spikes inside the container and I fill it with water, so in this way, there is always moisture in the root zone. For the first 2 years I grew this one indoors near our west facing windows. During a garden show, I asked one vendor about how to make epi plants bloom, and he said it must be grown in full sun. So last 2012, I have brought it outdoors, left it there even through winter, and surprisingly it did not suffer or die. I did enjoy seeing how it gets its reddish hues similar to what other cold happy succulents do. Growing it outdoors during the other seasons also allowed it to form nice quad shaped tips. After this winter, I saw there is a new growth coming out..not sure if it is finally the beginnings of a bloom or just another branch..anyhow, any growth is always welcome to see...
My epi cutting in Apr 2010: the cat figurine is the terracotta water spike.
The cutting gave a new growth in Sept 2010
The plant in Oct 2011, still grown indoors, has already made new thin branches:
In 2012 I have repotted it and brought it outdoors to get more sun, and by summer time it has made some leaves wider or in others some quad shaped tips:
I relocated the plant to this planter area during fall - winter 2012, gets all the sun, rain , cold..and seems quite okay with it:
This March 2013, I see this new growth..hoping it is a flower bud/stalk..or if it is another branch..am okay, as long as it shows it is still growing
But it will surely be nice to see some blooms soon
