My epis have received their share of abuse and still survived. Last fall I had taken some cuttings and then we had to go away unexpectedly. I put them in a ziplock bag with a moist paper towel. They rooted while we were away. Keep the bottoms of the leaves away from the moist towel or the roots will cling to it.

I've had these for about 8 years and they started blooming about 6 years ago. They were started from cuttings.

For those of you who are impatient, get used to waiting for the buds to mature and open. It takes about a month. These plants are epiphyllum oxypetallums. They only open at night and one night only! They have a heavenly fragrance. The one in my avatar does bloom during the day and lasts several days.
Any day you wake up on the sunny side of the grass is a good day.

Jean how beautiful!! I have a large one in my community room in my building, and after I moved in I became the plant care taker, this plant has never bloomed for me, so I took several cuttings last year. One thing that I now know I did wrong; a couple of years ago I transplanted many of the plants in that room, including this one, and thought it could use a nice large pot (finding out later that they bloom once they grow into their pot - that won't happen any time soon ) I may find a smaller pot and move it back into that - sounds like so much work though! Rolling on the floor laughing Blinking And now these cuttings are coming along, so I'm more attached to them Lovey dubby

Greg, the reward might be worth the effort of repotting.....or maybe you have some room in the larger pot for a couple of your cuttings! A little crowding might help! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

Really nice, Jean. I was given the same plant as is in your pics (oxypelatum) and am looking forward to seeing it bloom...

Thanks everyone. My plants are cuttings from my grandmother's plant, which still exists and we figure it is close to 100 years old. This plant has had quite a history, and is now recovering from its last adventure.

Thanks. This plant has been around and had to put up with less than ideal conditions but she has survived. Epis are pretty tough plants!

Epiphyllum oxypetallum has a beautiful and scented bloom. Unfortunately it lasts only one night.
Here is a picture of one of the blooms.

I got my epi cutting last Apr 2010. I have read that I should put it in a small well draining container, keep it snug and that it loves being moist. It does make sense since most succulents like to start in smaller containers first, but had to readjust my method of watering since, normally I really wait for my succulents to go dry before I water.
So to help me out, I got this terracotta water spikes inside the container and I fill it with water, so in this way, there is always moisture in the root zone. For the first 2 years I grew this one indoors near our west facing windows. During a garden show, I asked one vendor about how to make epi plants bloom, and he said it must be grown in full sun. So last 2012, I have brought it outdoors, left it there even through winter, and surprisingly it did not suffer or die. I did enjoy seeing how it gets its reddish hues similar to what other cold happy succulents do. Growing it outdoors during the other seasons also allowed it to form nice quad shaped tips. After this winter, I saw there is a new growth coming out..not sure if it is finally the beginnings of a bloom or just another branch..anyhow, any growth is always welcome to see... Smiling

The cutting gave a new growth in Sept 2010

The plant in Oct 2011, still grown indoors, has already made new thin branches:
Thumb of 2013-04-01/tarev/1274ec

In 2012 I have repotted it and brought it outdoors to get more sun, and by summer time it has made some leaves wider or in others some quad shaped tips:

I relocated the plant to this planter area during fall - winter 2012, gets all the sun, rain , cold..and seems quite okay with it:

This March 2013, I see this new growth..hoping it is a flower bud/stalk..or if it is another branch..am okay, as long as it shows it is still growing Big Grin But it will surely be nice to see some blooms soon Smiling
