Disclaime: the Pieris wasn't malpractice. I pruned it and decided it still wasn't what I wanted so I ripped out out. A mercy killing, if you will. No malpractice here!

Just wanted to mention here that you can divide any semp by cutting vertically through the rosette so that you divide the plant into equal halves. Just make a clean cut, be sure to let dry a few days before planting, then be stingy with the water until you see new growth.

This is often helpful to preserve a plant that does not produce offsets or is too old to produce offsets on its own. Divisions can delay flowering if done before the flowering process sets in (or even sometimes after) and often triggers offset production. Its a quick way to turn 10 plants into 19 plants (assuming you lose one along the way...), so if you want to fill a bed or pot quickly, you can double your numbers that way.

Hmmm, make me think I might have to do that with S. 'Gruenrand'. I have yet to have it produce offsets. Maybe I should take just one of the rosettes and try this method?

Whenever I buy plants I always look for ones I can split right off the bat. I wish I had known about splitting semps last year. I bought a nice full pot mid season and just broke it into pieces like I do other plants. Some parts did ok. But I bet I would have had better luck if I had cut it, or for that matter just left it alone and planted it whole! Sticking tongue out

If I do the surgery I will take photos. I will also pot up, instead of putting them back in the raised beds. That way I can keep them on the covered deck, controlling moisture and keeping a close eye on how they are doing.
Gruenrand is noted for not producing well. Sad

When you divide by cutting do you replant them in the usual way, or do you put the dried, cut side down? If so, on or in the dirt? I stuck Ruby Hearts back in the ground and its been pouring rain ever since! So much for withholding water!
