I'm fortunate to live close to Matterhorn Nursery in New York's lower Hudson Valley, where I buy some of my roses and perennials. For that reason I could have placed this post in the Buying Roses forum, but the nursery also features a formal David Austin rose garden that I like to visit, so I decided to put this posting in the Garden Tours forum instead.

The design of the garden is based on the Renaissance Garden at David Austin Roses in the U.K. The plantings consist of English Roses, other varieties of Old, Shrub, Climbing and Rambling Roses, accompanied by perennials, annuals, and shrubs. The plantings are varied and provide inspiration for visitors' own garden design ideas. The formal rose garden is part of a larger woodland garden that is enjoyable to walk around at all times of the year, and adjoins the nursery's garden center and shopping village.

This bridge connects the nursery's shopping area to the formal garden and adjoining cottage.

A long walkway with a pergola extends the length of the formal garden, where many pillar roses climb up the supporting columns.

The Austin roses at this end of the garden include Scepter'd Isle.

Several James Galways are also grown there.

Just beyond the pergola is a beautiful pool with fountains, surrounded by perennials, shrubs, and roses. (Notice the robin perched on top of the statuary.)

There is also an open air rotunda with Corinthian pillars embraced by some short climbers (that's James Galway again).

At the opposite end, Pan plays the flute for your listening pleasure.

Nearby, Spirit of Freedom roses bloom in profusion.

Back over by the colonnade is a row of benches...

... where you can sit down beside Mary Rose.

The garden cottage can be rented for special events.

If you follow the paths out of the rose garden and into the woodland garden, you'll come across the occasional "folly" that looks like a ruin of Gothic architecture or Olde English masonry.

When you cross over the threshold you can sit down to listen to the songbirds and watch the waterfowl in the pond across the way.

Nearby is a stairway to nowhere.

Not too far away is a Crocus Rose.
