there is a " desert " next to the humboldt penguin exibit with cholla and prickly pear. here is a list from aza.org of what they have in there
it was growing on a hill of crushed rock it was overcast so i dont know if it was south facing or what but i guess it was.
they looked ok coming out of winter so they must be doing something right
