Ruby Mound is just starting to open...

Chrysanthemum 'Ruby Mound' 10/2021 Mum- (Lehman) Hardy Garden Cushion Mum, Mature size: 36", deep maroon double cushion, Small Decorative, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW40, In Garden Bed Y2,9,-2 C3 for 6.3 YEARS (Jennifer). Planted in 2015.

GardenerWorld.com: Korean chrysanthemums were once popular for use as hardy perennials for borders and cottage garden schemes, as they are hardy and free flowering. A few of the best have survived, including Chrysanthemum 'Ruby Mound', which bears large double ruby red flowers from late summer into autumn. It makes an excellent cut flower.

Grow Chrysanthemum 'Ruby Mound' in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. If grown in a crowded border plants do not usually need staking, especially if an informal look is desired. Plants may need staking on windier sites, and winter protection is advised in northerly and exposed regions.

Family Asteraceae (ass-ter-AY-see-ee). Hardy Garden Mum, deep maroon double flowers. Flowers over a long period. Planted in 2015. (Lehman) Deep ruby-mound. Cushion Mum. Pigment penetrates petals avoiding faded flowers. 2020 note: I failed to support it this year, so it splayed. Seems to have no trouble handling the cold Michigan winters and wind. Survived 5 winters so far.

Yes, I would call them upright as opposed to cushion. I have a coupe that have not yet bloomed. Actually, I have one that generally blooms in November...

I think there are many terms to describe the flower types.

Family Asteraceae (ass-ter-AY-see-ee). University of Minnesota, 1982. Rose-lavender with gold center, 4in. quill/spoon. Tall upright. Looks good in 2017, 2018. One of my stronger growing mums.

2020 notes: This mum is in its forth year and is still going strong. Most of my other mums did not make it through the first or second winter. Soil in this garden is mostly clay and sometimes wet. There were another 11 mums that were planted in this garden and all have croaked.

Chrysanthemum 'Wild Berry' 10/2021 Mum- () Hardy Cushion Mum, Mature size: 24", Rose Pink, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW41, In Garden Bed Y2,9,-1 for 4.3 YEARS (Bluestone). Planted in 2017.

Rose pink Cushion Mum. Low mounds. Advertised as a short 12 inch plant. Mine is ~24 inches tall. Cushion mums are a type of hardy mum or garden mum. The name comes from the way they form a mound or cushion of bloom.

2020 note: Vigorous plant. Quite hardy. Many of the so called hardy mums that I have planted here in Michigan do not make it over winter. This one has survived 3 winters. Not sure of the plants origin, but it seems as hardy as the old time Korean heirlooms. If it is an heirloom, the name would suggest a more recent "marketing" moniker. Bluestone Perennials is the only nursery that I am aware of that carries this plant.

Chrysanthemum rubellum 'Venus' 10/2021 Mum- (¿cummings, 1930) Hardy Garden Mum, Mature size: 2-3', small flower, soft pale pink maturing to white, USDA Hardiness Zone 5-9, Michigan Bloom Month 10-11, In Garden Bed F4,12,1 for 5.5 YEARS (accents). Planted in 2016.

The Garden Geeks: Venus chrysanthemum (chrysanthemum rubellum) is a clump forming, bushy perennial, with woody stem bases. They have pinnatisect leaves. Great for herbaceous border or cutting. "the term korean mum is a bit of misnomer. They may have some lineage that traces back to asia but most of the early work done in developing this type of mum is credited to connecticut nurseryman and plant breeder, alex cummings, in the 1930s. They are frequently listed as chrysanthemum rubellum but many are actually hybrids of several chrysanthemum types. In general these mums have a more vigorous habit than garden mums and are more graceful, with thinner stems and a willowy, sometimesfloppy, habit. The color range is somewhat limited to whites, pinks, soft yellows and shades of gold. If you are willing to explore he internet enthusiastically you may unearth a purple variety or two. The fact that they begin to flower in mid-october and continue past a few frosts make them especially nice for late season color.

2021 note: this mum seems to be more hardy than many of the other so called "hardy" mums. Going strong after over 5 years in the garden.

AKA Celo Pink. Heirloom. An old fashioned mum. Tolerates poor soil, well drained, sun, growing to 30in. tall. Very cold hardy. Still in full bloom in November after several hard frosts.

Chrysanthemum rubellum 'Emperor of China' 10/2021 Mum- (Heirloom) Garden Mum, Mature size: 3-4', double pink with dark centers, USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW42, In Garden Bed Y2,6,-3 for 6.4 YEARS (selectseeds). Planted in 2015.

Finegardening: Chrysanthemum 'Emperor of China' (Z 4–9). Reaching a height of 3 to 4 feet, this selection has dark pink buds that form beautiful double flowers, which are pink with dark centers. The 1½-inch-wide blooms with quilled petals open quite late, usually not until the third week of October, but they last until Thanksgiving if there is no killing frost. 'Emperor of China' can appear lanky, so I recommend placing it in the middle or back of the border or pinching it in late spring.

Family Asteraceae (ass-ter-AY-see-ee). Heirloom. An old fashioned mum. Leaves turn beetroot red with age. Tall and spindly, needs support. Limited blooms in 2018 because of October frosts. 2020 notes: have had several frosts in October. Seems to be holding its own. Frosts have not been hard. Might try mulching this winter.

What a fantastic collection of hardy mums you have, Frank! Centerpiece and Venus are so pretty! Love their colors!

I also have a problem with my hardy mums flopping and sprawling like LorettaNJ noted above. I tried to provide support but they are so heavy when bloom that the support sometime gives way. Here are some mums that are blooming right now.
