Support Your Sempervivum Nurseries

By valleylynn

Where would we be without the nurseries that provide us with all the newest and latest varieties of Sempervivum? Trading is fun, but we need to remember to purchase from reputable nurseries in order to keep them in business.

We all need this reminder so that we can help. Thanks for reminding.
You know Lynn, I thought you gave us the best semp pics a few days ago in the banner and then in the article and now there's even better pictures here (esp. Bernstein, that one speaks to me..). What else you got up your sleeve?

Excellent advice, Lynn - along with buying local and small, whenever possible. I'll pay a bit more at our local family nursery for a plant that is also at Lowes. They know my face and it's a pleasure to be greeted like that!
In the end, only kindness matters.

I totally agree with you Sheryl. But I do a fair amount of online ordering with specialty nurseries. I seldom will find the type plants they specialize in at local, full service nurseries.
So I do some of both. Smiling

What local nurseries do you have Sheryl? They would carry plants that we wouldn't normally see here in our nurseries.

Oh, we have some really great ones - most of my faves are a bit of a drive, but.... Bach's Greenhouse Cactus Nursery, Desert Survivors are down in Tucson, so that's about 2.5 hours out, but worth it to see friends, too. Bakers Nursery closer to downtown Phoenix carries a lot of your more typical stuff along with the occasional really cool find, and that's my mainstay. I will stop at the "dead and dying" racks if I'm in Lowes looking for something else, but that's my limit.

Usually I get a lot from the our twice-yearly sale at the Desert Botanical Gardens. A little pricier, but you can find some really beautiful stuff that's not always available locally and it is for a good cause. And the Cactus and Succulent Society has their show and sale, coming up this week, woo hoo!!!
In the end, only kindness matters.

The specialty sales like your Desert Botanical Gardens are the best for finding great plant treasures.
Our Hardy Plant Sale is coming up the first week of May. I love that sale.
Sounds like you have a nice selection of nurseries to choose from.

Yup, pretty fortunate. And for way-out-of-the-way stuff, there's always Annie's Annuals!

I have yet to order from Annie's Annuals. But I sure love the plants they have on their web site. Maybe this will be my year to order from them.

We have a Annie's in CA and they don't have sempervivums. I was going to stop on by on my way to our state capital but checked their website and they skip from sedum to senecio.

Oh boy, did I blow the ol' budget at the CASS sale yesterday. No semps, but some really cool mammalaria and trichocereus (have you ever seen "Flying Saucer"? The blooms are bigger than my hand!).
