Thread OP

For those that use alfalfa pellets or meal around their daylilies, when do you apply them? Temps are still fluctuating between 30's at night and 60's during the day in my area. Daylilies are starting to show growth. Should I hold off till freeze warnings are no longer a threat or go ahead and apply the alfalfa at this time?

They take some time to break down and become available to the plant so I am adding mine now.......

I agree If the ground is clear this weekend, they will go down with some other stuff, and if not, then hopefully the next one!

I think you can apply the alfalfa pellets at any time. In fact wet spring weather is good to get them to start to break down.

Thanks Paul, JWWC, and Rita for your responses. I'm going to go ahead and put the pellets out this afternoon since there's a 60% chance of rain in the forecast for the next three days along with warm temps.

I'm been putting them on this morning with a little 5-10-5 fertilizer. I watering lightly with a sprinkler to break them down and will work them in tomorrow.

I'm so glad you showed these pics, Paul. Thank you so much.

Wondering when to do this as well. Some of mine have
frozen foliage still, but the next 2-3 days are predicted to be in
the 60s with possible rain, then turning colder again. Some of the plants'
growth looks similar to yours.

One thing, I wouldn't be fertilizing as yet, so maybe I should
wait and add the alfalfa when I fertilize.

Jan I AM STILL COVERED WITH SNOW TOO. But yesterday before the snow hit i noticed some daylilies poking out
from the ground. So the snow is keeping them warm. I hope.

Seems like only a few days ago we had snow also. Looked at plants
today with frozen foliage. But, today temp of 70. Where did that come
from? And once again in a day or two, night temps in the twenties.

I don't know how plants even know what they are supposed to do
with all this weird weather.
