I haven't had much time to post on the boards lately and here is why!!!!!

We have been building beds, beds, and more beds

Click photos to enlarge (for those that don't know to do this Big Grin )

This photo is from Nov. 2011 not too long after we started working at James Halls's place; this is his sales area.

This is the same area now

This photo was taken last year but this is what we had to do for all the new beds also
Thumb of 2013-03-16/tink3472/761724

We've also been putting in poles for the shade cloth over my area (FINALLY)

The ones to the left of first photo are the new poles

These are seedling photos. I didn't get them planted until really late once again this year ( I think I transplanted in Nov) so they are wayyyy behind Fred's seedlings.

Michele, I hope that James realizes what a GEM he has in you! You are truly amazing. I have great respect for you. Thank you for all that you do for everyone, especially in the daylily world. You have been such a help to all of us here on ATP.

WOW, well that is what ive been doing, but on a MUCH MUCH smaller( mine) scale. Im plain whooped. Dont know how you do it. I havent started on anything else in the yard, but Im really feeling good about the daylilies right now. The rest of the yard is just a mess, these have a time certain deadline. I can get to the rest anytime.

Michele, all of that looks sooooo good. What a lot of work.
Tell me you didn't help put in those huge poles!!! That would take some muscle
without machinery to do the job. Had no idea it took poles that large to cover
plants with shade cloth.

I don't know where you get all that energy.
What are the rose colored bushes in the background? They are pretty too.

Shirlee, with the first 4 poles I maneuvered the tractor lifting the poles with a chain; Kim and another person (Jim) help push them up and in. The other 4 poles me and Kim did it by ourselves with the tractor and I had to keep getting off to help maneuver the pole around or move the chain and then back on the tractor. Blinking

We got the poles at a different place than James did before and these are what they had. You really don't need poles that big, the other ones in the other shade area are shorter and not as big a round. At my old place I used 10' tall (8' after put in ground) x 2" wide PVC for the structure. You can use the steel pipes also, like Lyle uses.
The reason they are so tall is because we got 12' poles and I could only go down about 3' with the auger (not a full size tractor so smaller auger) and we kept hitting big rocks so they ended up not being as deep as we planned.

This is Kim (I'm loading the photos from my phone and this is showing up sideways, not sure if it will be correct or not on a PC Shrug! )

Teresa, that empty bed in the photo I believe was filled with the soil left from the pots from the daylilies we shipped so it would be pine bark, sand, alfalfa pellets, Milorganite, chicken litter, slow release fertilizer that has been broken down; it is topped with alfalfa pellets. This bed also had lots of rabbit manure added as well.
But the main components of all the beds is pine bark (the smaller sized pieces) and sand mixed together then we add the alfalfa, Milorganite, chicken litter, and slow release fertilizer to them all.

Incredible! I really love the look of the raised beds you and Fred have, so organized and neat. Still covered in snow and frozen here...wishing I could get outside in the garden. I keep telling myself, only a few more weeks...
