For those of you who grow "Jewel" orchids successfully, please post information as to their needs - potting mix, water, fertilizer, light, (dormancy), etc. Thanks. Ken in Mississippi

Ken, I just got my first Jewel orchids for my birthday in March and went looking for info. The score's not in yet on how successful I'm going to be, but so far they are growing like crazy.

Here's a link to the site where my kids bought the orchids. There are two other types on this site as well, an "alba' version of Ludisia discolor, and a little one called Macodes petola. ( I have all 3) All seem to need low light and lots of moisture. We saw some gorgeous ones growing at one of the nurseries we visited yesterday in Apopka. As this description says, they seem to grow easily, like a groundcover plant, so I'm giving them a shallow dish-shape pot, with room to ramble over the top of the soil. If they do well with the weather through the summer, I'm going to try a few cuttings in the garden.

Ludisia discolor always does better for me outside in Summer, warm and somewhat shady. But - here is the thing:
Some years ago I had a pot with Ludisia which did absolutely crummy for me, pieces kept falling off, it did lousy. I sort of threw out the pot, it wound up for a whole Summer in a sunny corner in my yard, waiting to be dumped out so I could re-use the empty pot. Well, in September I looked at it a little closer, it looked better than ever. Healthy strong new growth!! All the soft growth was gone. Taught me that it actually can take a bit of sun, and also our Summers here in NJ can be quite hot with temps in the nineties.

Mine is in bright indirect light all year. It's one of the house plants and doesn't get much moisture and no airflow in winter. Apparently it likes neglect. Unfortunately it always has scale when I finally look at it. Sad

Mine are always in shade. Just a slight amount of early morning sun in the middle of summer.. Ludisia discolor is blooming now
