Chrysanthemum Form:
Chrysanthemum (semi-double): Counting 6 layers of petals which gradually decrease in size towards the center. Stamens can be normal, or somewhat petaloid (where the stamens become petals). Pistils are normal.

Rose Form:
Rose (semi-double): Counting 6 layers of petals, which are usually larger than the chrysanthemum form. Petals are larger on the outside than on the inside. Stamens and pistils are somewhat or mostly petaloid.

Most of my tree peonies can be identified with these two forms. Though I find that the descriptions above rather confusing. They sound so similar to me. The two forms seem interchangeable.

I think this NOID which is maybe Shimano Fuji can be classified as the Rose Form

I only have one tree peony flower so far, this is a semi-double, not sure what form it is, a descendant from Kamata Fuji.

Anya, sorry, I forgot to post it's Lavender Hill, not Kamata Fuji, it's a descendant of Kamata Fuji.

Absolutely lovely peonies Karen. I'm glad you are putting the classification descriptions in your post. I do think I would flunk the test though!! Rolling on the floor laughing

Your Lavender Hill is stunning, SoCal. I can't wait for mine to bloom.

Here are some of my blooms. I think they are Chrysanthemum form as none of the stamens appear to have been transformed.

ShimaNishiki without any white on the bloom.

Thanks for the acorn LG, I particularly like Jack's Point. I'm thinking of getting more tree peonies in this color.

Love the tree peony blooms, the colors are just so incredible! I'm with Anya though, can't make sense of the classifications, they seem to overlap almost completely between rose and chrysanthemum form. Think I'd just default to semi-double! Rose or chrysanthemum form does sound much more lyrical than semi-double and the blooms are definitely deserving of the more poetic description.

Valerie, I am sorry that you lost so many trees. That must have been hard to lose Hanakisoi. Its flowers are magnificent!

I agree they are all so lovely. I'm so glad I got a second Hana Kisoi, I think this is the flower that my ex-coworker sent me, that's the start of my search to grow more peonies. So lovely!

I haven't tried tree peonies here....yet. But Lavender Hill and Sunrise certainly have me considering giving them a trial run. Wow.

Wow Val! Each one is a delight. I bought High Noon specifically because it is said to rebloom! Yours is exciting . My Sunrise came from Adelmans also. So do you think Adelmans own root woodies do as well as the grafted woodies in your Northern garden? I have seen statements that own root divisions do better in southern gardens.

ST, your blooms are gorgeous. I just bought Golden Crown from Cricket Hill. Is that the same as Yellow Crown? Yours looks like a very large bloom.

I just love the pink of Seidai.

Okay Tracey, surely you have some beautiful photos to add to this thread.

Leslie, you really should try at least one woody peony. Get a good quality one from an online peony nursery.

LG - I would say own root woodies cut out a few years of growth that grafted woodies go through in our gardens - provided the nurse roots are managed and not left to take over D'Oh! However I'm also sure that hardiness is also dependent upon the particular cultivar. If I had to choose though I would much prefer to buy tree peonies on their own roots,

Your tree peony blooms are stunning, Valerie and ST52!

ST52, love the tree peony and allium combo! What a beautiful contrast! The trees look really nice standing by themselves apart from other plants. How far do you space them from other plants? I am planning to get Yuchiyo tsubaki (八仟代. How old is your tree and where did you get yours?
