Search for crevice gardens on the net and you'll find a whole other slant to rock gardens.

Could you tell me what everyone uses as a planting medium in general? Just the chicken grit or do they mix this with sand, pea gravel or what? Thank you.

Seems each person has their favorite mix. For Sempervivum they really want something that drains fast and doesn't compact and hold water.
For me I use Happy Frog. This is the mix I use. http://foxfarmfertilizer.com/i...
I mix with pumice, about 3/4 potting mix and 1/4 pumice. This can vary.
If I am planting in my raised beds, which is a mix of forest compost, sand and chicken grit. After planting I top dress with chicken grit.

Others will come along soon and give you their recipe.

Just found this article that Chris did. Has a number of different recipes. : )

OK I guess that's an invitation! Hi Doglover, I use any potting soil mixed with 1/4 perlite and 1/4 chicken grit (I don't use sand because it can get heavy over time) I also top dress using chicken grit! (only just started using it, and it is amazing!!)
I am curious to hear from others too! I tip my hat to you.

I use 4 parts composted bark/peat mix and 1 part stone dust. I eliminated perlite last year because it was holding too much moisture. I add a bit of lime, bone meal and a tad of slow release fertilizer.
