I've just bought this on Ebay.

Thumb of 2013-03-24/Eviesmummy/f52b5a

I want to try my hand at making a Semp ball when I have enough chicks (so probably not for a while yet). Although I think I'm going to try and find a tall vase like container or plinth to place it on rather than hang it.
Does anyone have any good tips for planting shapes? I made some topiary frames last summer for hedging plants - they still have a way to grow to fill the frames, but I see even more semp ones in the future!

Bev and Chris have done these. Some one else has, but I can't remember who.
Must be old age catching up to me. Whistling

That is one lovely sphere. I see it is in two halves. Take it apart and line it with core or moss, fill with potting soil and place the halves together again. Then plant.

Kate are you asking do people have other ideas for "frames"?? Lynn has a gorgeous swan frame, and I've seen others on here too, also can't remember! I tip my hat to you.

That will be fun to plant Kate and should be gorgeous! I would prepare it the way Lynn suggested.

Thanks for the tips Lynn I tip my hat to you. I'd love to see your swan frame if you have pics.

Greg, it was more how to go about planting them, but I always love to see what others have created Thumbs up

Kate, here is an article I wrote on making succulent wreaths, but I use the same method for planting any topiaries.

That is a great article Chris. I forgot about it. *Blush*

Kate I don't have a swan topiary, it is a brass swan that I planted.

Kate, you might like this tutorial on my site (hope it doesn't look too much like self promo Whistling ) http://www.drought-smart-plant...

These are super easy to make, and very effective. You'll see on the tutorial that I recommend using a large planter or something really solid as a base; these suckers are heavy!
