In case you don't belong to Evey's clematis cubit, you may not know that she's open for business now.

http://www.simplyclems.com/

She has a terrific variety of clems for sale. I have always planted clematis vines in the same planting hole with my climbing roses, but Evey's offering some shorter clematis that can just scamper up a rose shrub or a grandiflora. No need for trellises or pillars. The rose will offer enough support.

I want this thread to have a thumbnail, so I'll add a photo of Romantika climbing up Berries 'n' Cream, even though I don't think Evey's nursery carries Romantika.

Thanks for the plug, Zuzu!

Romantika is a great performer... I have it planted in my garden too. =)

You're right... I'm not offering Romantika this year. I do have quite a few by its hybridizer, Uno Kivistik, but I tried to focus on the newest cultivars. I currently offer twelve of the Kivistik cultivars, among many others, on my site.

Does this harm the rose any? My mom had a rosebush with a vine growing on it and her rosebush died.

Depends on the vine. If it was bindweed, the rose was probably choked to death. I've had morning glories mixed in with a rose with no problems. Clems use plants and other things to hang off of. They're not parasitic.

I think it was called a Cypress Vine. Her rose was beautiful and that thing smothered it to death. I tried to tell her not to plant that by her rose bush but she wouldn't listen.

The Clematis you posted looks so good with that rose. I'm going to have to try that!

wow, from what I just read on DG, it's a pretty evil little plant. Darned shame as it's so beautiful. I can't think of any place I could I put this w/o it choking out roses.. maybe in my maple? If it killed the maple I wouldn't mind.. I hate that darned tree. It's a 30 year old silver maple that breaks limbs every time the wind blows. Yuck.
