We were at a friend's Easter party today. She has 17 of the 18 known staghorns. I found a few on the fence, but forgot to go back and snap the ones on the carport.
While others were watching the puppet show, I was snapping photos!

Ladies...your gardens are just as beautiful...your gardens are what you are...perfect. Neither is MORE anything. I fight this comparison/judgement crisis all of the time!!! And I have chosen (after hours of anguish) to just accept what I have/don't have/can do. There is no one with long robes going to look at you and say, "Sorry, you are a failure. You have 47,000 more weeds than the allowable 5. Go to the back of the line.

I am happy. My animals are happy. My husband is happy. My plants are healthy and prolific. More I cannot give you. Ma Nature is NOT perfect...collections are NEVER complete...

I have fought this comparison 'stuff' for years and beat myself to a pulp, in my 60s trying to have a perfect showplace. Crikey...I have 12 acres in a climate where everything grows more than it should...where Agent Orange would fail...and I have decided that it IS WHAT IT IS. Basta. Enough. Thanks for your visit. Ciao!!!

All said with a big smile and lots of love. Lovey dubby
It's all about choices.

You're right Carol. I need to start accepting my garden more, and be thankful that I at least have a little space to do some gardening. I got a few compliments last year from neighbors and even the mailman. Not too many people have gardens in my area.

Gee, Sandi, I thought I was a "collector", having four varieties of staghorns. Seventeen of the eighteen known varieties is absolutely remarkable. What in the world does your friend do with all of them in the winter? Ken

She has a small out bldg. and a screen house that she covers in plastic. Some of them have been left out when it was freezing and were fine. Except for a little tip burn damage, they survived on an open carport.

Some of her "luck" with leaving them out in freezing temperatures is that they were under cover and thus frost-free. Also, many of our tropical plants will take a few hours of freezing temperatures, even as low as low-twenties, so long as it warms back up during the day. That being said, I would never leave mine outside even in the upper thirty's. They are my "babies", some being well over ten years old.

Sandi: Wow, your friends Staghorn's are absolutely gorgeous! Thumbs up I sure love those upper and lower verandas on her house too! When I was younger I dreamed of having a big southern style home with wrap around porches; a couple of rocking chairs, a big swing at one end ... and hanging baskets of plants and flowers everywhere . Lin, it's a beautiful old historical home. I'm on my iPad, but I'll post a photo of the front of the house when I switch computers. She has huge hanging baskets in the old oaks around the property. No rockers on the porch, but there's room for four tables for dining out there.

Can't find a photo of the front of house, but here's the historical sign out front. And for the Easter party, she bought the banner that hung last year at the real White House Easter Egg Roll from a "garage sale" that C3 Presents had here a couple of months ago. It was so big, they had trouble hanging it on the house.

Sandi, How neat that they were able to acquire the 2012 White House Easter flag! I love historical buildings and enjoy visiting the St. Augustine, Florida area about 40 miles north of us so I thank you for sharing the photo of the historical marker showing information about your friends house. Wow, 22" thick stone walls and built in 1875 ... that sturdy house has been around a long time and will no doubt stand for many more years to come! Homes like that are treasures for sure!

Lin, as a historic landmark, they can't change things or add on in any way. That's the trade off for not having to pay property taxes on it. I once asked why she didn't have a greenhouse. She said she couldn't add anything. I'd be trying to add on!

She had a bad experience buying the last one from eBay. It wasn't what the seller claimed. She brought it to a mtg. and showed us what she paid $250. for. I think that soured her on buying sight unseen anymore.

Oh my ... $250 for a plant?!%&# Wow, she really must be a collector and I bet she was truly disappointed if she didn't get what she paid for!
