It's either a caterpillar or part of a pretzel. I don't remember ever seeing one on a rose before.

I'm voting pretzel. I've never seen a caterpillar look like that. Can you get a better pic? I don't know if it could have crawled off THAT far.

It didn't crawl? Then what *was* it's mode of motion? Ooz? Eeyew.

(honestly, it kinda looks like a worm that got dropped on it from above, as it looks kinda slimy in the picture. Either that, or it's a giant brown booger that got sneezed out. Between the two, I'm almost voting booger)

Sometimes roses sprout canes from the middle of the blossom. And sometimes those canes sprout another, smaller flower. It's rare, but it can happen. The other thing appears to be the top of a car whose paint is peeling.

Steve - You've lived in AZ long enough to see what sunblasting does to cars in the extreme heat! Back east, don't have that problem as everything just rusts away. Out here, everything just peels away. :D

You are right about the peeling paint on the truck...
Maybe a bird, dropped the worm?
It is not a pretzel or a booger...
And yes the mode of locomotion was ooze....I thought it was a 'bad' worm...

That's what I'm thinking. It kinda looks like a drowned worm (you know, the ones you see on the driveways & sidewalks), a robin picked it up, flew towards it's nest, and accidentally dropped it right there. That's why it doesn't have the iridescent shiny color of a healthy worm AND why it looks slimy gooey. Next question is how did the rose get on the car? Did you cut the rose & laid it there as a tabletop? Or does your roses droop onto your car?

I cut the rose with the worm and then used the top of the truck as a table top.

awwww.. I was envisioning a cascading waterfall of gorgeous roses onto your driveway so that, whenever you drive up to your home, you're enveloped in gorgeousness and the scent to make you swoon, then you accidentally crash your car into your house 'cuz you can't see and the butterflies blind you.

I have a '88 Chevy truck whose paint looked like that - bad year (or decade actually) for paint I understand.
