Adding moisture to the air creates a micro-climate for houseplants that need more humidity.

We heat our house with wood which is very drying. I suffer from dry eyes & besides a large humidifier in room where stove is I have 2 small ultrasonic humidifiers in other rooms where I keep orchids.I could see a marked improvement in both the comfort of my eyes & my orchids.

We also heat with a coal/wood burning stove. We had a humidifier years ago and when it stopped running we just started keeping a pan of water on the stove and that makes a big difference.

I keep trays of water under plant shelfs etc.
I use the standard seed starting trays with no holes.
This works well for when i go away. I then use somewhat deeper plastic tubs or basins.
If the house is humid the plants do not dry out when I am away.

We really like to travel and quite often go for 2 or 3 weeks at a time. Having someone come in and care for the house plants can be iffy.
