Not too late for onions. I won't be planting any sets until the end of the month. only did seeds once and it was not a success.

Rita: I grow my potatoes in Smart Pots. I dont' have enough real estate to let the vines sprawl, so I use some double-ringed plant supports, and put plastic netting around it. The vines stay confined, and I can continue to grow the vines up and continue to mulch them. Last year, I started with ~ 2.5 # of seed potatoes, and harvested almost 18# of potatoes. I think that was worth the effort,... and they taste sooooooo good. Thumbs up

I have used sets in the past but found I get bigger onions using the small plants (someone else started from seed)
Do they have a name , you know the ones that are tied in a bunch , bare root , with green tops?

I love small new potatoes with greenbeans , but hate the price so I grow them and dig early.

Green onions - pre-sprouted onions in the green, so to speak. I've seen them at nurseries, but just go with the sets.

I plant those too Cinda, I think they are called starts or plants. I order mine every year from Dixondale Farms http://www.dixondalefarms.com/

I just brought 40 - 45 flats of tomatoes and peppers into the house tonight for fear of frost. They are all destined for our Master Gardeners plant sale next week, and they are beautiful plants. I didn't have a way to adequetly protect them, so my husband set up protection on the floor of our living room, dining room and foyer so we could bring them in. And I still have 8 flats that haven't made it outside yet.

I will be very happy to see these plants picked up for the plant sale on Friday Thumbs up

I just planted my peppers today and some of them you can barely see! I started seeds inside late Jan. When I talked to other farmers at market they said theirs are the same (the ones that start from seed). I sure hope they catch up!

My melons are in paper pots and just starting to germinate. As well as squash. I'll get those out as soon as they have first true leaves. I planted a small area of corn so I still have to plant more. Oh, I'll plant a small batch of okra tomorrow for market since we don't eat it.

The flowers seem to be doing fine but the rest of the things seem really far behind. We did have three heads of Chinese cabbage for market on Sat. but no broccoli.

Oh, we are overdosing on strawberries though! Came home from Michigan and looked like no one had picked and there were three days of heavy rains so there were a lot of berries mushed but we still got quite a few. Waffles again for dinner tonight! Yummy! Been freezing quite a few as well. Not making jam this year since we eat very little of it.

Arlene, waffles for dinner again sound great to me. I will be over for dinner again later! Hilarious! Hilarious!

When I first planted my tomatoes out the seedlings barely peaked out from the straw mulch. They all had little nests ha-ha. But they grew fast, yours will too.

I have melons I grew myself too, haven't planted them out yet as they are small seedlings.

You have gotten lots done. Hurray for veggies!

Rita, I'm way behind you! Hilarious! Hilarious! But in the end, it all seems to catch up so I'm not worried, gonna just do what I can. Well, I never catch up with the weeds. And we put straw down for mulch as well, after we let the chicken have it for a couple of weeks. Mine has way too many seeds in and just makes more work for me if we don't do that. But I'm running out of straw so we'll have to go get more. Isn't it a great mulch?

I used all the waffles I froze so I'll have to make more but you're welcome to come! Hilarious! Hilarious! We've been using freshly milled whole wheat flour my son mills and adding a few chopped pecans as well. DELICIOUS!!!

We're kind of known at market for having lots of varieties so we did about 8 or 9 varieties of melons as well. We have a lot of trouble with squash bugs so it's a challenge to get them to maturity. I put floating row covers on but since they hatch from the ground it seems they get in there anyway. I have to try and miss the hatching cycle so sometimes it pays to plant later. We also planted about 7 or 8 varieties of cukes, including a brown Yugoslavian, lemon, white along with regular salad types.

If the tomatoes are any indication of how the peppers will do now that they're in the ground, we're in good shape. The tomatoes are doing great. Two got broken from landscape fabric blowing up and knocking them over but I have replacements. We tried the dwarf kind this year and they look terrific. Hope the tomatoes are tasty. I'll take pictures of their progress.

I bought seeds of so many tomato varieties last fall and over the winter. Including varieties of those new Dwarf Project tomatoes. But I never started tomato seed so I had to go buy all my tomato seedlings as usual. Maybe next year. And I used to grow melons years ago but haven't in years. Well, did try last year but I got hardly any because I started my seeds too late.

So around February I should remind you to plant your tomato seeds? It's so rewarding to start from seed. Do you remember where you got your seeds for the Dwarf ones? I got mine from a new vendor, I think it was Heirloom Tomatoes. Small company. Personal note with the seeds.

I used to grow my melons vertical and just sling the melons but since we have the room I just grow them sprawled now. One variety we got last year that was really good (hybrid) was Maverick. All the rest we do are heirloom, fancy pancy ones! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing
