Saw these at Home depot yesterday. They are not the newest cultivars but are all well worth growing. Very nice plants and only $6.87. Wide Brim and Queen Josephine are favorites in my garden.

Ever since I spotted some hostas with HVX at our local Menards I've stayed away from the big box stores just to be safe. It's always tempting, though. Every now and then they have nice, big hostas that are hard to pass up.

I have 'Queen Josephine' on my wish list...Might get one, they are having a great sale and I have lots of reasons to go up there.

Have had Patriot for several years. Maybe that's why I like the Francee so much? Hilarious!

At the price I would get 2 Queen Josephine, plant them together, and have an instant clump.

Great idea! Francee I got by accident when someone sent the wrong plant. It does very well in sun and has great flowers.

Buy your hostas where you want, but just remember you have a better chance of running into HVX at the big box stores and the non-selective nurseries than you do from a hosta grower. Sure their stuff (box stores) is cheaper but I really don't want to take the chance of infecting my hosta collection with HVX to save a few bucks. To each their own, tho. Oh yeah, and the box stores and the non-selective nurseries usualy get their stuff from the same place, they both just package it different.

Me, I'll stick with someone that lives and grows hostas.

Well so far I have no plants from BBS but if I did buy one I would definitely isolate it for a year. Does anyone have one of those test kits?

I'm with those who will stay away from hostas at any place other than where the stock has been tested.

There are test strips that work well, but are not cheap. They need to be kept in the fridge and should be OK for a year - maybe a bit more as long as they are kept cold.

But there may well be some nurseries that sell them. Or they are often available through Hosta Societies.

Is that $105.00 for 25 test strips??? Gulp...I will stick with the companies that test them for me. nodding

The test strips are expensive. I seem to remember always hearing that they were around $5 per strip, so $105 for 25 seems like a bit of a bargain.

I stick to my reliable nurseries to avoid the worry of testing or, worse, finding HVX in my yard. I have a local nursery that was always a favorite of mine until, a couple years ago, I asked them where they got their hostas and whether the hostas were tested for HVX. The nurseryman I chatted with said, "Oh, I think that's pretty much been wiped out." He told me he had no clue about testing, but that some of their plants came from Walter's, but others came from Holland. I haven't purchased a hosta there since, just to be on the safe side.
