Some type of tortoise, maybe? He's cool, whatever turtle he is!

I tried Google Lens by taking a pic of my PC screen for the heck of it (it's always wrong), and it came up with Common Snapping Turtle. While I really don't put much stock in any ID app, this time it sure does look like it. Well, 1 correct out of probably 100+ tries Hilarious! ... you know the saying, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

The shell looks different than our local snapping turtles, and the foot seems to be a tortoise foot.

How can you tell a tortoise foot from a snapper foot? He's still in my fenced garden somewhere Blinking

In looking through all the links, there seems to be some regional slight color variations, but the foot looks identical to several I've seen.

Anyway, I vote he gets to stay, he's cute no matter what he is! Maybe you'll be lucky and have baby turtles. Or not if they end up eating your garden depending on your view.

His shell at the back where it is jagged. Cannot see if he is a red eared slider or not, but he isn't a box tortoise.

Not a red eared slider for sure. This turtle is really big. Like 8 or 10 inches around Blinking

It looks like a common snapping turtle to me. Compare to these two photos:

Any chance that he's a she, laying eggs? I think they come up on land for that.

Snapping turtles are okay while they're small, but they can grow to 35 lb. and 18" long. I have seen one kill an adult goose.

My thought also. One year at our old house I watched a soft shelled turtle come out of the water and into the yard where she dug a hole at the base of a tree and laid her eggs before slowly moseying back into the water. I kept watch every day because I so wanted to see the babies but one morning I went out and something had dug up the eggs. Only one remained and it was broken open. I figured a raccoon or something got them. Sad

I would also say a snapper . Is there a lake or pond by you? They will go from one water source to another and lay eggs on land. We see them quite a bit around here going in between the lakes. One that size can give quite a nasty bite.

I read that people should not move nesting turtles.

She hid last night but is back out of hiding this morning.

I'm wondering if she just came into the garden under my tomato plant or if she laid eggs there.

I'm also wondering if she will be able to find her way out of the garden Blinking
