I tried Google Lens by taking a pic of my PC screen for the heck of it (it's always wrong), and it came up with Common Snapping Turtle. While I really don't put much stock in any ID app, this time it sure does look like it. Well, 1 correct out of probably 100+ tries ... you know the saying, even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Anyway, I vote he gets to stay, he's cute no matter what he is! Maybe you'll be lucky and have baby turtles. Or not if they end up eating your garden depending on your view.

My thought also. One year at our old house I watched a soft shelled turtle come out of the water and into the yard where she dug a hole at the base of a tree and laid her eggs before slowly moseying back into the water. I kept watch every day because I so wanted to see the babies but one morning I went out and something had dug up the eggs. Only one remained and it was broken open. I figured a raccoon or something got them.

I would also say a snapper . Is there a lake or pond by you? They will go from one water source to another and lay eggs on land. We see them quite a bit around here going in between the lakes. One that size can give quite a nasty bite.
