I do not grow orchids but love seeing them. I saw this yesterday and the bloom was amazing.

Lovely, Paul. I just returned from a visit to my kids in Salt Lake. Had to once again tell my daughter that it's nigh on impossible to grow orchids in Utah without a greenhouse to keep the humidity up.

I've grown Phalaenopsis in an east facing window successfully before. I keep a piece of plastic board under them and wet it down a couple times a day for humidity. Also have a humidifier on the furnace. There is an active orchid society in Utah and they put on a wonderful show. I think it was last weekend and I let it slip by and missed it. I would love to have gone and taken pictures. Maybe next year.

Kathy....you posted while I was replying to Elaine. It is at a local greenhouse. The staff there are familiar to me and I remember one of them telling me last year that an individual decided they didn't want it anymore and brought it in and gave it to them. It bloomed last year but is more spectacular this year. Did you notice the foliage color? Striped.....

Paul, we did see a small orchid show at Red Butte Gardens back in November - my last visit. There were some very nice displays, and even some from Nevada but I got the impression they all grew their 'chids in greenhouses of some type or another.

Trouble is, my daughter and her DH both work full time, have dogs, cats, a garden and house to maintain etc. She likes plants, but is not a dedicated gardener. She'd never remember to do what it takes to keep the humidity high around an orchid. That being said, her DH gave her a "blue" orchid (aka Ti-Dee-Bowl orchid Hilarious! ) for Valentine's day. It was still in bloom when I visited 2 weeks ago, (nearly 2 months!) but the foliage was shriveling. I recommended she put it in her bathroom window (also east facing) so, well we shall see!

I have a white one with that silvery striping on the dark foliage. It's really pretty, but all those pink flowers, WOW.

Me either. I think if someone wants a blue orchid, they should just buy a fake one. At least then it will stay blue. The dyed ones are white when they re-bloom.
