I don't know how to explain it.I hope you can see the outside growing high i guess than the middle.

You can see how the center is lower than the outside. The sun comes up and hits the highest side first but the ones in front aren't doing it and there are babies in the middle of all 4 & 1 sticking out of the side since these pic's were taken i will try to download my pictures from this morning into my computer but i have to get back outside!!
Thumb of 2013-04-21/jojoe/319575
click on it and pay attention to which side the smallest one to the side is on and it will help you know when i'm on a different side but i will get the pictures i took today on here as soon as i can!!This may be normal,i just don't know. All the ones i've seen blooming the center comes up not the outside coming up higher than the center??

Yes, Jackie, I have that with mine too and I wonder whether it is caused by uneven exposure where one side of plant gets more sun than other. I also wonder whether the sunny side taller growth is maybe a response of protection of the growing center from the extreme exposure/heat. I have had uneven sides of sempervivum three times as tall as the shorter side and wonder why that is so.
Anybody got answers/ theories? Blinking Confused Confused

It could totally be due to sunlight, yes! Also the webbing is more intense in hot sun - so maybe a protection measure! Thumbs up

The webbing is a protection from harsh sun and wind.
You can see the same growth pattern on this clump of S. arach ssp. tomentosum.

Lynn, aside from the webbing, you think the uneven growth is also in response to harsh sun and wind? Reason why I am still wondering is because I see this uneven growth pattern on my semps that don't have webbing.

Glad to hear mine aren't the only one's or that i'm not the only person wondering about it.I also wonder why with mine the 2 that are facing the side the sun is on aren't doing it,the ones behind them are!! Kinda like Lynn's not all are doing it & i find it strange that the younger ones are doing it.With mine the highest side is the side the sun is on.

Unexplainable.
Here's two jovibara grouping in the same garden area; one bunch is in a flat that sits in morning sun and the other jovibara group sits in the semp bed in the late morning-afternoon sun with covering on real sunny hot days. Notice how wide open first grp is while the second grp that's been in noon sun is closed up and lighter in green color.
I purchased them at same time.

Greg, My DH has dibs on the more open group for another bed. I'm stuck with the sucked in group. When I planted the sucked in group, it originally looked like the more open group. So it's not a question of whether I like or not, I am just shocked at how it closed up...Like it's checking out and waiting for mission control and gonna take off any minute. I will wake up tomorrow and it will be gone; just an empty hole where it was planted... Crying

It is normal for them to do that Bev, when they are getting to much sun, or time of day when the sun is too intense for them. When conditions change they open up.
I have them in my beds in different places and some will do that way.
