Moving Large Containers

By batflower
April 28, 2013

Large potted plants can be a heavy problem when you wish to move them out for the growing season or back in for the winter. Remember that a dry plant is lighter than a wet one. With that in mind, withhold water for a few days. Then, find 4 pieces of pipe or old broomsticks, and hoist the pot on top of them. Then, as you roll the pot across them, keep putting the last roller in front as it gets left behind. Little by little you will have moved your pot outdoors without hurting your back!

Eerie...Were you watching me last month as I was doing that roller thingy? *Blush*
I thought I heard someone laughing at me as I kept singing 'Walk Like an Egyptian' while I was rolling the plants. We learned in school that is one of the methods the Egyptians employed. I saw my Dad do this with the fridge when I was five years old, and he was only in Egypt one time during WW II). The other thing that helps is a smooth board - use a hand truck to lift the leading edge of the container, slide the edge of the board under a few inches. Then, if you can attach a rope or two to the large container, it may slide along a board as you (carefully, slowly) pull it to its new location.

A good idea from history!
I sometimes wait for rain or frost and then can slide the big pots into location.
