Not really, it is more clay like. I know we had ice a couple times last year on my fish ponds. We got snow last year too. I've had them in the ground four or five years. They are completely covered. I'm experimenting with one in a pot that is partially sunmerged in soil. It is just sitting there I see no large amount of growth.

Yeah I get it Charlen only I do not have a stupid dog but chickens who rip every tag out of the soil that I put in. I was buying some South African bulbs with the hopes of using them to sell or trade when they increased . I spent a lot of time making labels and tagging everything only to come home to bulbs tag and dirt all over the patio.

My neighbor has chickens and I caught them taking my tags. They were very comical though. They would grab a tag and either take off running with it or flip it in the air. They were having a blast while I was freaking out. Rolling on the floor laughing

LOL, that's too funny about the chickens! Well, I guess I wouldn't be laughing if... I used to raise chickens too, but rarely had them out in the open where they could reach the garden.

Charleen, your Amaryllis are wonderful! Is that Black and Blue Salvia by the red one? I've had B&B Salvia survive the winters here as a perennial for about 6 years now.

I found out last year you can take cutting and root them too! Break it off, shove it into potting soil and keep it damp. I got one that came thru the winter in a pot where I started it...

Would a Gloriosa lily be hardy in my zone 7 garden? I've wanted some for a while now but before I buy any, I'd like the opinions of this group.
Thanks,
Lee

I have mine in a pot and had them in GH. I would almost bet they would possibly make it. Do you think so Neal????

Kevin, I don't think that Gloriosa lilies are reliably hardy in z7. I'm in 7b and have had them overwinter in pots under protection on the patio. They were right next to the brick and under glass windows that were leaning on the brick wall. Lost them this year sadly, Charleen. They didn't make it into their protected spot before the first crazy snow.

I've been tempted to try them in the garden though since we are unofficially thought of as an 8a by some due to generally warming temps over the years. Seems the zone listing for them is 8b though. Is that correct, Neal?

one thing i know they need too is good drainage. if drainage is sharp they might could tolerate colder temps. i only tried gloriosa's one time at the beginning of the summer and i think they steamed to death in the pots i had them. i would like to try one more time in a raised bed.

Bev, zone 8 is what the sources I've looked at agree upon. I've got mine in pots on the deck again this year, where I'm getting more sun than last year due to some tree removals. Still partial shade, but they're getting enough sun now to grow well and are blooming now.

Barb, I wonder if the roots got too hot in the containers? They are in the Lily family, and Lilies prefer cool root space, so it's a possibility. The leaves don't seem to mind sun and heat. Since you're in zone 8, I bet you'll have good chances of overwintering them in the ground- let us know if you try it and how they do Smiling

That's what I'm seeing, too Neal. One of these days I'm going to get a good number of them and chance a few in the yard. To tell the truth I'm not getting much done out there despite really good intentions. Too hot and humid plus some physical issues this year...bummer.

Bev, sorry to hear you're having physical issues. It sure isn't healthy for anyone to be out in this heat though, and I imagine it's even worse in the Carolinas than here. Gloriosas multiply well when they're happy. If you get a few to grow in pot, you'll probably have extras to experiment with the 2nd year.
