Not just Bluestone, the industry as a whole. But everybody has had to cut back on plastic. It takes somewhere between 100 - 1000 years for them to biodegrade!

My point was I didn't feel like Bluestone was FORCED to change by some governmental decree. They have chosen to make a better choice and be a leader. The EPA didn't force them to.

I sure hope so. I talked to a man at Michigan Bulb a few years back and he said the EPA had got after them. I assumed he meant them as a company or industry but I guess it could have been them as a state. The EPA is in charge of all waste but allows the states to make up their own regulations. I know each state is different because of the size of their Landfills and population.

I think Bluestone is setting a very good example, regardless of any regulations their state might have. That was my point in the beginning because no one likes the coco pots and complains about them, but they are good for the environment.

Now what got me to call Michigan Bulb? They sent me plants with no pots that were completely dehydrated with micro-tape, they were looking for different options just like Bluestone but they, (MB) failed miserably as far as I was concerned, but at least they tried.

I don't like the coco pots once they get to me. I think it is good for the environment that they use them. But they don't work for me. They dry out in a second and I don't find that they break down. I immediately strip them off. I simply transfer to a pot I have recycled OR I plant out right away. So I think they are a good alternative for the environment, I just don't believe the hype they are all they are cracked up to be.

They just don't seem to break down fast enough. I re-pot my plants right away, I do not feel guilty about throwing them away at least.

By-the-way, this company has developed an additive that will cause plastic to break down in 1-10 years! That sure sounds better than 100 years. My question is this, What if there is still a plant in there?

My mom just found some pots at the dollar store that said they were biodegradeable. They looked like a normal plastic pot.

My husband gets so mad at me because whenever I see pots in the recycle bins on trash day I'm often picking them out to take them home and use them. He's always baffled saying "don't you have enough pots already?!!" But I'm always giving away plants or trading. I really do use the pots!! It is nice to see at least in my neck of the woods that people are putting them out with their recycling.

Yes, at least we know what to do with them! I like buying used pots on eBay and when I need to get rid of a few there is 'Free-cycle' in my city, but also I could use 'Craigslist' and offer them for free there also.

I'm a little curious about a study that says it takes a hundred to a thousand years to break down the plastic. Since it hasn't been around for that long, how do they know it takes that long to break it :down.

Makes a person wonder, especially coming from a company that's trying to sell something.

When I lived in MD everyone knew I recycled pots and often I would find a bag of them on my front porch! I post "We Recycle" signs at market so anyone can bring their used pots to me and they have. Also, I use cut water bottles for my "vases" for my cut flowers. Customers love it.

I don't like the coir pots from Bluestone either. They are so thick and I haven't had any luck with plants growing through them, just strangling and almost dying until I dug it up and removed the coir pot.

Me too, but now that I know I toss them right away!

Plastic is insidious! Have you heard of the Plastic Garbage Island floating in the Pacific ocean? It's huge, bigger than the size of Texas X 2 and impossible to clean up. Here is a link about it:
