Thanks, Janice!

Those Tulips look like a group known as the "Temple sports", various sports of "Temple of Beauty". I believe 'Perestroyka', 'Hocus Pocus', 'Temple's Favorite', 'Blushing Beauty', and 'Blushing Lady' are all sports of 'Temple of Beauty'. They're classified as late singles, but bloom earlier than other late singles for me, and occasionally show some mottling in the foliage, which makes me wonder if there is Gregii parentage. I've seen mixtures of them offered from Colorblends and VanEngelen (John Scheepers) catalogs.

Update.
DBH says he think the voles are under control. He checked the bait stations and for the first time no activity. Let us hope.
I have been able to plant seeds which are flowering now in that long bed. Last year every seed I planted there mysteriously disappeared. Progress.
But complacent never. I realize the voles are probably all around us and can move in again, so the bait stations stay in place. They are great because you really don't notice them.

These are from the front beds.

valleylynn: I tried to post here the other day and I believed I must have posted in the wrong forum, thread, what have you. New to all this computer stuff, Anyway, I too have euphorbia in several diffferent areas mixed with many many daffolfi clumps, no probelm with voles in front yard. Unfortunately, they are eating all my lillies in the back yard, where; of course; there are not any daffodills or euphorbia. I have 4 dogs that roam the back yard, do make quite a mess digging these little critters right out of the gardens and the grass. Looks like the lillies have to all be moved to the front yard. I am not a southern gardener though, I am in Illiois, but still have that vole probelm.

Hi Sgardener and doglover!
Re contacting Thelma. You can Google Iris Farm in Winston Salem, NC (AKA Mom's out of control Hobby) .
Re voles. YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!
I believe they are gone to vole heaven!!! Those beds are full of flowers now and we left the bait stations in place.
THEY REALLY WORK!!!!.Thumb of 2011-07-05/sandnsea2/a8308e

I am so gald I came across this thread, I've been having vole problems for a while now. I had to rip out ALL my ground covers the other day since they provide ideal cover and nest material. Most of the perennial were saveable, but they almost took out a Sumac and a full grown Clematis Grumbling I plan on hitting WM soon since they always have their Daffs on for super cheap end of season, I will also try the Euphorbia! I have one and now that I think of it, its one of the few plants that was untouched! They also seem to have a dislike for Yarrow, the Tulips planted under the yarrow are the only ones that have been untouched.......

Just found this tread about voles.

Whe have over here the same problem
Dont know if any of you ever tried to plant out some Fritillaria imperialis bulbs
Fritillaria imperialis flowering takes place in late April or May, accompanied by a distinctly foxy odour that repels mice, moles, and other rodents.

This is the only cure that worked for us. And now the garden is thriving! And you leave the system in place and it is virtually invisible.

Good luck!
Yes, Daffodils will survive in a vole infested area, but if you live near woods, they are constantly foraging and you really need a bait sytem to control the population. They can decimate an entire landscape, trees and all...

Ferenc, I planted daffodils around my lilies this year, and that really helped keep the voles away. I forgot all about the frittilaria, I knew that repelled them. Thank you for reminding me!

You must live in bulb heaven there?

Yes, Polly, Daffs can protect Lilies, somewhat, but I found the voles still found the Lilies and only a few were left.
Plants will only be a mild deterrent, and when the cold winter comes and voles are hungry enough, they find food to survive.
And, unfortunately, the voles multiply exponentially.
I know alot of folks don't like to use bait., until the destruction leaves no alternative.

I think it depends on the amount of vole infestation, Janice. It totally took care of my lilies in a big area. But I don't think I had too many voles, maybe they were just getting started. I didn't have a ton of vole damage before the daffodils, just some. Nothing like you describe.

Horrible little critters. Do they have any purpose on earth?

When there is no alternative and tree and rose roots start being eaten, and they keel over, you have a serious problem and you need to use bait or else give up your landscape.
Also we may have a different species of vole here than you in cold weather climates have.
